Mechanical Technician
Location: Pulp - Tec, Cumbernauld
Employment Type: Full-time
Reports To: Production/Operations Manager
Salary: £29,000 – £33,000 DOE + Overtime + Pension scheme
Role Purpose
To ensure machinery and mechanical systems operate at optimal performance by carrying out preventive maintenance, diagnosing faults, and completing timely repairs to minimize production downtime.
Key Responsibilities
• Perform mechanical maintenance and repairs on production machinery, conveying systems, pumps, drives, bearings, and related equipment.
• Diagnose mechanical faults and restore machinery to service quickly (reduce MTTR).
• Carry out and update preventive maintenance schedules, lubrication, and inspections.
• Complete strip-down, rebuilds, alignment, tensioning, and fitting tasks.
• Support machine installations, upgrades, and improvement projects.
• Maintain accurate maintenance logs, repair records, and part usage.
• Identify and report root causes of failures and recommend solutions.
• Comply with health & safety standards, permit-to-work rules, and lock-out/tag-out procedures.
• Assist in operator training for basic adjustments and checks (Level 1 maintenance).
• Communicate with Production and Management on machine status and priorities.
• Ensure proper use and care of tools, manuals, and spare parts.
Essential Skills & Experience
• Proven experience as a Mechanical Technician/Fitter in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
• Strong working knowledge of bearings, shafts, rollers, conveyors, gearboxes, and couplings.
• Experience with pumps, pneumatics, and hydraulics.
• Proficiency in mechanical fault-finding and strip-downs.
• Ability to read technical drawings and mechanical diagrams.
• Comfortable working under time pressure to restore equipment quickly.
• Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a cross-functional team.
Desirable Experience (Not Mandatory)
• Experience in pulp, converting, paper, printing, or packaging industries.
• Exposure to preventive maintenance systems (CMMS).
• Basic welding, machining, or fabrication skills.
• Familiarity with electrical/controls fault awareness.
Qualifications
• Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship, NVQ, City & Guilds, or equivalent vocational qualification.
• Relevant health & safety training (LOTO, manual handling, etc.) is a plus.
