Description
The Neonatal Unit at The James Cook University Hospital is a part of the Northern Neonatal Network and provides a level 3 neonatal service (as defined by the British Association of Perinatal Medicine) for sick newborn babies in the Northeast of England and North Yorkshire. This unit is approved for higher specialist training in neonatology (Grid Training) by the RCPCH College Specialty Advisory Committee and Health Education Northeast. There is an accredited specialist Fetal Medicine Service on site, as well as Paediatric Ophthalmology, Paediatric Ear Nose and Throat surgery, and Paediatric Anaesthetics. There is also a large acute Paediatric Department with different sub-specialties including a sub-regional Paediatric HDU, neuro-disability, and community paediatrics where some of our NICU graduates receive on going care outside of NICU.

Applications are invited from suitable candidates for this post which provides excellent service and training opportunities in a level III tertiary neonatal unit. Staffing within the neonatal unit comprises nine Consultant Neonatologists undertaking inpatient and outpatient work, Tier 2 doctors including HSTs, tier 1 doctors, Clinical Research Fellow, and Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. The 1st tier rota consists of ST1-3 doctors, trust employed doctors and Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners. All rotas are compliant with the European Working Time Directive and the new Resident Doctor Contract 2016.

The neonatal department has a strong educational and academic base, and many opportunities exist for the post holder to acquire clinical skills and training as well as audit and research experience. The post is exactly comparable to training posts in terms of opportunities and many doctors have progressed to appointment in paediatric training programmes.
