Job Summary

The Novel and Dangerous Pathogens training team provide training in biosafety and biosecurity. We work locally, nationally and internationally with various stakeholders including the World Health Organisation, the International Health Regulations Strengthening Project, Chemical Biological Radiation Nuclear projects and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations. We provide in-person training and are currently expanding our range of digital training packages.

We are looking for someone to support the running of our training laboratories, courses and to assist in the development of digital training packages. There may also be opportunities to provide training in-person and also deliver overseas. You will be supporting the Novel and Dangerous Pathogens training team to execute their deliverables.

Job Description

The post holder will play a key role in supporting the Novel and Dangerous Pathogens training team to deliver high-quality biosafety and biosecurity training efficiently and effectively across UKHSA. This includes contributing to the successful delivery of commercial project commitments made with stakeholders; a key aspect of the role will be facilitating the maintenance of the training laboratories, supporting the organisation of in-person training materials and assisting in the development of high-quality digital training content for global distribution. This position is vital to the team’s mission; supporting the onboarding of incoming scientists at Porton, facilitating knowledge exchange across UKHSA and contributing to large-scale commercial and international projects aimed at promoting best practices, skills, and standards.

• Support the creation and development of digital training packages

Essential Role Criteria (including Qualifications, Licenses And Registrations):

• Knowledge in the organisation of laboratory equipment, e.g. calibration of equipment
• Laboratory management skills, e.g. inventories and ordering
• Experience in developing and maintaining databases (e.g. matrices or dedicated management systems)
• Experience in communicating and engaging effectively with a range of people, e.g. internal and external staff
• Scientific background or equivalent experience in, e.g. microbiology
• Awareness of digital e-learning packages, e.g. Articulate, Kallidus, Absorb.

• You will be asked to complete a short laboratory-based activity designed to assess your competency in utilising spreadsheet to review equipment.
• You will be asked to prepare and present a 5–10-minute presentation at the start of your interview to introduce yourself and your background/work experience.

Eligibility Criteria - External

Location

This role is being offered as office/lab based at our Scientific Campus in Porton (Salisbury).

If based at one of our scientific campuses, you will be required to have a Counter Terrorism Check security vetting check as a minimum. For meaningful National Security Vetting checks to be carried out individuals need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time. You should normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for the last 3 years as the role requires Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) clearance. In exceptional circumstances UK residency less than the outlined periods may not necessarily bar you from gaining national security vetting and applicants should contact the Vacancy Holder/Recruiting Manager listed in the advert for further advice.

Future location

UKHSA is investing in a new state-of-the-art National Biosecurity Centre in Harlow, Essex, which will eventually bring together teams currently based at Canary Wharf, Colindale and Porton Down. For more details, please see: Huge biosecurity centre investment to boost pandemic protection - GOV.UK.

The new facilities will start becoming operational in the mid-2030s, with full completion by 2038. Staff will move in phases as facilities become available. If you're appointed to a role currently based at Canary Wharf, Colindale or Porton Down, please note that we'll continue investing in these sites for the next decade.
