Plymouth City Council is seeking to appoint a Consultant in Public Health to join its Public Health Directorate.
Plymouth offers an exciting and substantial public health challenge; a coastal city with significant deprivation, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to apply creativity and innovation to the support of health and wellbeing for a population of approximately 263,000 in Plymouth.
Plymouth City Council, and its partners across the city, have taken a system-wide approach to the development of a ‘vibrant waterfront city where an outstanding quality of life is enjoyed by everyone’, as described in our corporate plan. Being a unitary Council, there is significant scope to influence across the whole system to influence the wider determinants of health, and services such as Environmental Health, Licensing, Coroners and Registrations and Bereavement Services form part of the public health directorate. Plymouth has been pioneering whole -systems approaches for many years (see for example the Plymouth Plan) and our values-led integrated commissioning approach means that services are designed around the needs of people. Our recent award of an NIHR Health Determinants Research Collaboration is an exciting development which will help us to embed our human learning systems approaches and ensure that we are conducting relevant research to inform both our services and national evidence.
We are seeking an appropriately qualified public health professional, with excellent problem solving, communication, political and technical skills, who has the energy and drive to make a major contribution to improving health and reducing inequalities in Plymouth. The post holder will have a senior role within the organisation and will make a significant strategic contribution to the overall Public Health objectives of improving health and reducing inequalities. They will work with local communities and in partnership with other local agencies to address the wider determinants of health, to protect the health of the population and to ensure the commissioning and provision of high quality primary and secondary health and social care.
Each of the Consultants in the team has lead areas, and for this post they centre around substance misuse, health improvement, and public mental health, with connections into healthcare public health as required, with corresponding budgetary and management responsibilities.
This post can be full time, or part time for a minimum of 0.8 FTE, with some flexibility around working hours or a job share.
For an informal discussion about this opportunity, please book a call with Professor Steve Maddern, Director of Public Health via 01752 398606 or steve.maddern@plymouth.gov.uk
