About The Role

Are you ready to take the lead in managing some of the UK’s most critical road tunnel infrastructure? We’re looking for a Tunnel Operations Manager to join our Living Places team in the South East, ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of tunnel assets across our DBFO contract.

What you'll be doing

As Tunnel Operations Manager, you’ll be accountable for the day-to-day safety, availability, and performance of our road tunnel network. You’ll work closely with technical teams, contractors, and national stakeholders to ensure compliance with the Road Tunnel Safety Regulations and deliver operational excellence.

  • Lead the safe operation and maintenance of all DBFO tunnel assets.
  • Fulfil the statutory duties of Tunnel Manager under the Road Tunnel Safety Regulations (2007).
  • Direct inspection, control room, and on-road teams to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with the Tunnel Safety Officer to implement safety recommendations.
  • Analyse incident reports and support investigations into tunnel-related events.
  • Assist in budget planning for tunnel renewals, inspections, and maintenance.
  • Ensure security standards are upheld to protect tunnel infrastructure.
  • Support cross-functional collaboration to drive continuous improvement.

Who we're looking for

Essential

  • Valid UK driving licence and flexibility for site visits, including night inspections.
  • Experience in tunnel operations, infrastructure management, or a regulated environment.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and decision-making skills.
  • Working knowledge of tunnel safety regulations and operational best practices.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams.

Desirable

  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status (or working towards it).
  • NEBOSH or IOSH qualification.
  • Familiarity with systems such as IAMIS, SharePoint, Mainsaver, and Agile.
  • Qualified or working towards recognition as a Tunnel Manager
