Job Description
The operative will assist with various tasks on-site, ensuring projects are completed efficiently and safely.
Responsibilities
Costain's Highways Maintenance team are recruiting for an Operative to carry out all aspects of Highway Maintenance works for the National Highways Maintenance & Response Contract.
The Key Objectives Of The Role Are
- To observe and promote all aspects of health and safety as directed.
- To conduct various maintenance works on extremely busy motorway and trunk roads, such as but not limited to:
- Small drainage repairs, safety fence repairs, kerb and flag laying.
- Grass cutting, gully emptying and routine tidying of depots.
- Minor surfacing
- Post and sign replacements.
- Winter Maintenance, as required during the Winter Maintenance period.
- Maintenance and Response Team duties as and when required.
- Small element of traffic management.
- Driving a range of vehicles as part of maintenance duties, often for long periods of driving.
- Site preparation and maintenance: Clear sites of debris, set up temporary barriers, and maintain clean and safe working areas.
- Material handling: Load, unload, and distribute materials to designated areas.
- General labouring tasks: Dig trenches, break concrete, or assist in groundwork and landscaping activities.
- Health & Safety compliance: Follow all health and safety procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Additional duties: Perform any other general duties as directed by the Site Manager or Supervisor.
- Working night time and weekends and unsociable hours and on call for incidents and winter maintenance
Essential
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
- Class 2 HGV Licence
- CSCS
- Winter Maintenance
- First Aid at Work
- Physical fitness to perform manual labour and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Basic understanding of construction health and safety regulations.
- Ability to work well as part of a team.
- Reliability and a strong work ethic
- Team player
- Good communication skills for interface with members of the public and other stakeholders
Desirable
- Experience in a similar role.
- Experience of Highways maintenance activities e.g. grass cutting/ gritting
- Knowledge of construction tools and equipment.
- First Aid or other relevant qualifications.
- Driving licence (for site mobility).
- High speed road network
Qualifications
Essential
- CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card.
