The Ophthalmic Nurse Practitioner (ONP) will have a dual role within the Ophthalmology Department at Sussex Eye Hospital, UHSussex NHS Foundation Trust, specialising in intravitreal injections and oculoplastic services. Key responsibilities include administering injections for retinal conditions such as AMD, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusion, and managing care in the oculoplastic theatre for procedures under local anaesthesia, such as biopsies, lesion and cyst removals. The ONP will also support nurse-led post-op cataract clinics, diagnostic services including fluorescein angiography, and contribute to treatment planning in a fast-paced setting. The role demands strong clinical skills, attention to detail, and commitment to patient-centred, evidence-based care. The post holder will undergo training to achieve competency in injection delivery, minor procedures, and ophthalmic condition management. The ONP will promote audit, research, and innovation, and work closely with the AMD and oculoplastics Lead Consultant to develop and expand nurse-led clinical services.
We are seeking a skilled practitioner to perform intravitreal injections for medical retinal conditions, both under supervision and independently, and to run nurse-led clinics including minor ops and cyst clinics. The role involves supporting ophthalmic procedures such as OCT, fundus photography, visual fields, visual acuity testing, administering drops, and monitoring intraocular pressure using iCARE and Goldman Tonometry. You will assist in outpatient clinics, support patient assessments, monitor outcomes, and ensure accurate documentation. Educating patients on retinal and oculoplastic treatments, medications, and post-procedure care is essential.
You will assess and manage patients with complex symptoms, contribute to nurse-led post-op cataract clinics, and escalate complications when needed. The role includes developing treatment plans, coordinating multidisciplinary care, triaging calls, handling the patient advice line, and supporting those undergoing therapies.
You must work within clinical governance frameworks, ensure patient safety, and follow Trust policies. The role requires competency in injections, emergency management, safeguarding, and evidence-based practice. Collaboration with nursing, clerical teams, and promotion of a safe, patient-centred environment is key.
