Paediatric Staff Nurse (Emergency Department)

Location: Frimley Park Hospital

Department: Paediatric Emergency Department

Position Type: Permanent (2.18 WTE full-time and part-time roles available)

We have an exciting opportunity for experienced and enthusiastic Paediatric Staff Nurses to join our supportive, dynamic, and forward-thinking team in the Paediatric Emergency Department at Frimley Park Hospital.

Our department sees approximately 30,000 children annually, aged 0–17 years, presenting with a wide range of conditions from minor injuries and illnesses to major trauma and resuscitation. Patient safety and high-quality, child-centred care are at the heart of everything we do.

You will be supported by a dedicated Practice Development Lead and a structured Staff Nurse Development Programme, helping you build key emergency nursing skills.

Main duties of the job

To work as part of a team of nurses, health care assistants and the wider multidisciplinary team and be responsible for the assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating of nursing care.

The fast-paced environment of Paediatrics ED means our staff have to be adaptable in adjusting their priorities to patient and departmental needs which can change rapidly. We are looking for motivated and flexible nurses that are able to adapt to this ever-changing environment, whilst keeping patient safety and compassion at the forefront of everything they do.

  • In conjunction with the nurse in charge, be responsible for an identified area of clinical practice within the Children's Emergency Department
  • Assess, formulate and evaluate practice based programmes for children and young people in conjunction with their families and supervise the junior members of staff with their programmes of care
  • Maintain a learning environment enabling student nurses and NQN's to achieve their learning objectives
  • Act as a role model to all staff within the Children's Emergency Department
  • Act as a resource for the Emergency Department for child protection issues
  • Participate in the induction of all new staff
  • Maintain own continuous professional development
  • Any other duties, which may be requested by the manager, to facilitate a smooth running of the department

  • Current NMC registration
  • Registered Sick Children's Nurse
  • Evidence of recent continuous professional development

Desirable criteria

  • Child protection training
  • Mentorship Qualification
  • PILS
  • EPLS

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience of working in an acute or clinical environment
  • Ability to prioritise patient care
  • Ability to work independently

Desirable criteria

  • Accident & Emergency department experience

Skills & Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Effective communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to manage difficult / stressful situations
  • Awareness of current paediatric pathways in the emergency setting
  • Child protection
  • Sound clinical knowledge
  • Ability to work under pressure

Desirable criteria

  • IV drug administration
  • Competent in triage
