The Nottingham BBSRC Doctoral Training Partnership

Four-year funded PhDs available in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security, Bioscience for Human Health and Biotechnology for Sustainable Growth - October 2025.

Thanks to £14m of funding awarded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent in partnership with the National Biofilms Innovation Centre (NBIC) are offering fully funded innovative four-year cohort-based training in frontier science across priority areas focussed on the three overarching research areas. This funding covers tuition fees, a stipend, and RTSG (research training and support grant).

Alongside the scientific PhD training, the programme will provide a wide range of training opportunities.

DTP Standard Programme

Students will be recruited to a research cluster within each of the overarching research areas :

  • Heat resilient agriculture (Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security)

You will apply to this one research area, and work alongside your peers for the first 10 weeks of your studies, splitting your time between high-level training and laboratory rotations. You will also take part in a three-month placement during your third year.

Standard Programme Requirements

Applications are invited from students with backgrounds in Bioscience, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Environmental Science, Plant Science, Soil Science or related disciplines who have/expect to graduate with a first/upper-second UK honours degree, or equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK.

Funding details

Funding is available for four years from October 2025. The award covers tuition fees at the home rate plus an annual stipend. This is set by the Research Councils and will be £20780 for 2025. Only Home candidates are eligible to apply. If you are unsure of your fee status, please complete this form .
