The Role
We are looking for a self-motivated and collaborative professional to develop the nature and deforestation work of our Policy Programme. This is an exciting time to join IIGCC to work on this strategic priority for the organisation. You will add to and compliment the work already being done in this area in our Corporate and Investor Strategies Programmes by adding the important policy and advocacy angle.
You will report into the Director of the Policy Programme and will work closely with the global climate senior policy manager in the team on climate-nature synergies, including to prepare for key milestones such as the nature components of the ‘climate’ COPs and CBD COP in 2026. You will also work collaboratively with colleagues in other teams working on nature and deforestation initiatives, such as Finance Sector Deforestation Action (FSDA) and Nature Action 100, to identify related policy considerations and advocacy opportunities.
You will be responsible for designing and executing a nature and deforestation policy strategy for the team and identifying relevant initiatives and partners to engage with, including collaborating on advocacy campaigns. As the first hire with nature expertise and knowledge in the policy team, you will advise on the regulatory and policy priorities for engaging with investors and policy makers in this area. You will identify policy gaps and opportunities to engage with decision makers on these areas and spearhead the policy team’s nature work which could include drafting thought leadership pieces, presenting work to investor members and representing IIGCC, including through public speaking at relevant events. Relationship management is a key part of the role as you will be the focal point for a range of stakeholders, including investors, UN and European stakeholders and civil society.
While this role is initially offered on a fixed term basis for 24 months, we hope that the contract can be extended.
Main responsibilities
- Develop and execute a policy advocacy and engagement strategy to advance key nature and deforestation policy priorities for IIGCC.
- Coordinate IIGCC’s participation at the biennial CBD COP and work closely with the policy team’s global climate senior policy manager to support preparations for annual ‘climate’ COPs and other relevant events with a climate-nature component.
- Work closely with investors to identify opportunities to influence nature and deforestation policies that encourage deforestation-free finance flows and nature positive investments.
- Lead on IIGCC’s nature and deforestation advocacy activities and collaborate with other relevant organisations, keeping abreast of relevant policy and regulatory developments at European and global level.
- Manage relationships with key stakeholders, including in investors, relevant UN bodies, European policymakers and civil society organisations.
- Produce thought leadership pieces, case studies and other relevant content for IIGCC members or external audiences on nature/ deforestation policy issues.
- Represent IIGCC in external nature and deforestation meetings, initiatives and events, including through public speaking engagements on occasion.
- Collaborate with other IIGCC teams and initiatives as required.
Some travel, including internationally, will be necessary as well as some out-of-hours calls.
Skills and capabilities
Essential:
- Demonstrable experience of working on nature and/or deforestation topics.
- Awareness of the nature policy landscape, such as the current and emerging policies, frameworks, and initiatives addressing nature and deforestation risks and opportunities.
- Experience engaging directly with policy makers i.e. at domestic, EU and/or global level.
- Solid understanding of the interconnections between nature and climate, including the role of nature-based solutions and forest conservation/ restoration in the context of key international frameworks (e.g., Global Biodiversity Framework, Paris Agreement, etc.).
- Strong project management, coordination and organisational skills, with proven ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Enthusiastic team player with strong track record of managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders, demonstrating flexibility where required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and presenting.
- Fluent in routine IT tools including Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Powerpoint, Excel).
- Fluency in English language.
Desirable:
- Experience presenting to and engaging with senior/ technical experts.
- Understanding of EU decision-making and legislative processes.
- Knowledge of finance and how investors work (i.e. climate finance, nature finance).
