About Us
The British Business Bank is the UK’s government-owned economic development bank, dedicated to making finance markets work better for smaller businesses. Our Enterprise Capital Funds (ECF) programme plays a vital role in supporting high-growth SMEs by increasing the supply of venture capital.
The ECF programme is one of BBB’s longest standing and most successful programmes, with £1.4bn committed across 50 funds under 39 different managers since its inception. This has supported over £2.5bn of funding being committed to funds investing in UK early-stage equity. The programme enables new and emerging fund managers to invest in UK SMEs with high growth potential, while also facilitating the development of their own track record and attraction of private capital. The outcomes of the recent Spending Review have meant there will be increased activity in this programme over the coming years (in addition to new initiatives being introduced) and as such both investment activities and portfolio for the team are expected to significantly grow over time.
We are now seeking a Portfolio Manager to join our ECF Portfolio Management team. This is an opportunity to help shape and deliver a cross-team approach to portfolio management within the ECF and the wider Investment Business and build a career in UK venture capital.
The Role
As a Portfolio Manager in our ECF team, you’ll be responsible for managing existing ECFs, developing and improving portfolio management processes, and ensuring our interests are represented in all fund relationships. You’ll work closely with Fund Managers, other investors, and internal teams to monitor performance, address contractual matters, and drive process improvements.
This is a varied and collaborative role with potential opportunities to contribute to investment workstreams.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing consent requests, contract variations, and other commercial interactions with Fund Managers.
- Engaging with public and private Limited Partners to align interests and inform decisions.
- Monitoring and improving portfolio management processes and procedures.
- Preparing reports and analysis on portfolio performance and composition.
- Representing the Bank at fund-related meetings and industry events.
- Supporting marketing and promotion of BBB-managed funds.
- Potentially managing junior team members.
About You
We’re looking for an analytical, organised and commercially minded professional.
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Experience in financial services, such as fund management, investment banking, accountancy, corporate finance, commercial lending, or small business finance.
- Strong commercial understanding of small business finances or fund-of-funds investing.
- Experience improving processes and working collaboratively across teams.
Desirable Skills & Experience:
- Excellent organisational, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- It would be an advantage if you also have:
- Experience in contract management, variations, dispute resolution, or termination processes.
- Experience analysing and reporting on fund or SME data.
- A track record of managing stakeholder relationships.
Why Join Us?
At the British Business Bank, you’ll play a key role in shaping the success of innovative, high-growth businesses across the UK. We offer a collaborative and supportive work environment where your expertise will help drive real economic impact.
Apply now to be part of a team that’s powering the UK’s business potential.
