About The Role

We are pleased to announce an opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Practice Educator Nurse to join our paediatric Children’s assessment Unit and paediatric emergency department team. We have a 24 hour Children’s Assessment unit and paediatric emergency department at Pinderfields General Hospital. You will be expected to work across both of these areas, developing new skills and receiving training. We also work closely with our Paediatric ED and CAU team at Dewsbury District Hospital which has a 24 hour paediatric emergency department and a 12 hour children’s assessment unit. We cover an extended area across Wakefield and Dewsbury District, dealing with sick acute medical, surgical, and trauma needs.

  • Plan and maximise opportunities to deliver work-based learning for both registered and non-registered staff.
  • Support the monitoring, recording, and reporting of all learner activities accurately and promptly.
  • Maintain clinical competence across all relevant learner needs to supervise and formally assess competence.
  • Employ innovative and creative approaches to effectively utilise resources and technology within education programs.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision, coordinating own and team activities to ensure efficient service delivery.
  • Provide guidance and support to staff on personal and professional development by promoting Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and career advancement opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain specialist knowledge of nursing practice to act as a clinical resource for colleagues.
  • Actively participate in relevant organisational meetings, contributing feedback and taking appropriate action.
  • Serve as a role model by promoting excellence in practice through education, leadership, supervision, advice, and clinical skills training.
  • Ensure training records are accurate and up to date.
  • Support the development and implementation of a competency-based framework for clinical practice as part of the Children’s Professional Development and Education Team.
  • Demonstrate competence and expertise in the safe handling of medicines, including supervision and assessment of junior staff learning these skills.
  • Manage and organise own workload effectively, recognising and communicating any limitations in knowledge or competence.
  • Maintain awareness of own professional development needs and ensure attendance at mandatory training sessions.
  • Provide guidance and support to staff facing work-related challenges, fostering a collaborative and supportive team environment.
  • Participate in the induction and orientation of new staff members.
  • Facilitate clear, timely communication of educational and practice information across the organisation.
  • Promote the sharing of best practices in quality assurance and inter-professional learning.
  • Inspire and motivate others to recognise the value of education in enhancing clinical practice.
  • Collaborate with clinical managers and senior nursing staff to address specific learner needs within the clinical setting.
  • Lead service improvement initiatives by identifying areas of good practice and opportunities for development, supporting the sharing of best practice across local and national forums.
  • Deliver education and training programs that develop the knowledge, skills, and competencies of professional and support staff to meet service needs.
  • Conduct presentations and teaching sessions internally and externally, employing diverse methods tailored to different audiences.
  • Maximise informal teaching opportunities with a flexible, innovative approach to education delivery.
  • Collaborate with divisional practice educators to maintain high standards in education and training packages.
  • Foster an environment that supports inter- and multi-professional learning in practice.
  • Recognise and celebrate the achievements of individuals and teams.
  • Monitor and evaluate clinical standards, developing education action plans in partnership with Unit Managers to enhance patient care and experience.
  • Participate in audits and support ward managers in developing education-focused improvement plans.
  • Represent the organisation at external events to promote career opportunities.
  • Act as a positive role model, embodying the organisation’s values and professional standards.
  • Manage staff conduct, capability, and absence processes as required.
  • Support revalidation for direct reports and junior registrants.
  • Identifying development needs and ensuring all staff have up-to-date Personal Development Plans.

Key Requirements

Children's Registered Nurse with the NMC (RSCN/RCN)

Teaching and assessing qualification/ Practice educator and assessor preparation (PEAP) or equivalent

Evidence of continuing professional development.

Experience of leading innovation and change

Experience of clinical teaching and/or supporting student/ learners in practice

Recent evidence of developing healthcare practice within the clinical setting.

Expert knowledge and understanding of learner roles

An understanding of own development and training needs

Trust vision, values, strategic objective and key work programmes

Knowledge of related local and national policy and guidelines
