Role Description:
As a Principal DevOps Engineer, you will be a senior technical leader and subject matter expert (SME) responsible for the design, automation, and operational excellence of our enterprise data platform. You will drive innovation across hybrid and multi-cloud environments—primarily AWS and/or Azure—through infrastructure-as-code, containerisation, performance tuning, and cloud-native practices. This role is both hands-on and strategic, with a strong focus on enabling faster, safer delivery of business-critical data services.
You will lead DevOps activities across multiple projects, modernising platforms, improving operational lifecycle development, and integrating new systems into the broader operations architecture. You will also play a key role in enabling data engineering teams to deliver high-quality, secure, and scalable data pipelines through robust CI/CD and automation!
Key Responsibilities:
- Technical Leadership & SME Responsibilities
- Act as the DevOps SME for the data platform, providing architectural guidance and technical leadership across infrastructure, automation, and deployment strategies.
- Responsible for the design and implementation of infrastructure-as-code (IaC), CI/CD pipelines, and observability frameworks to support scalable, cloud-native data platforms, including ETL/ELT processes.
- Drive innovation through automation, containerisation, and performance optimisation across hybrid and multi-cloud environments.
- Team Leadership & Mentoring
- Provide mentorship and technical direction to DevOps engineers and cross-functional teams, fostering a culture of collaboration, learning, and engineering excellence.
- Support team development through coaching, knowledge sharing, and hands-on guidance in DevOps best practices.
- Lead by example in driving high standards for reliability, security, and delivery velocity.
- Platform Reliability & Automation
- Build and maintain secure, scalable, and automated infrastructure to support data engineering and analytics workloads.
- Ensure platform availability and performance through proactive monitoring, alerting, and incident response.
- Operational Excellence
- Define and implement observability, logging, metrics, and incident management.
- Lead root cause analysis and post-incident reviews, leading to platform improvements.
- Continuously improve operational processes and tooling to enhance platform resilience and developer productivity.
- Security & Compliance
- Implement robust security controls, secrets management, and compliance monitoring in line with organisational and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with security and governance teams to ensure infrastructure and data services meet required standards.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with data engineers, architects, and product teams to align DevOps practices with platform and business goals.
- Act as a trusted adviser on DevOps strategy, tooling, and operational readiness for data-centric projects.
- Lead DevOps efforts across project-based initiatives, including system upgrades, platform modernisation, and integration of new tools into the operational architecture.
- Support the delivery of enterprise data pipelines in regulated environments (e.g. finance, government), ensuring compliance, scalability, and performance.
Skills & Experience:
- Experience in a senior or principal DevOps engineering role, ideally within data-intensive or regulated environments.
- Strong software development background with experience in distributed, highly scalable, and cloud-based systems architecture.
- Deep expertise in infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform, Pulumi), CI/CD tooling (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI), and container orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes).
- Proficiency in scripting and automation (e.g., Python, Bash, Go).
- Experience with Azure and hybrid/multi-cloud deployments.
- Familiarity with data platform technologies and workflows (e.g., Spark, Airflow, Kafka, Lakehouse architectures).
- Strong understanding of observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, Datadog) and incident management practices.
- Knowledge of security practices including IAM, RBAC, secrets management, and vulnerability scanning.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives, mentor engineers, and influence engineering culture.
