Principal Full Stack Engineer

Chroma is partnering with a well‑known high‑street retailer that’s continuing to scale its engineering function and is now looking to hire a Principal Full Stack Developer. The role offers a salary of up to £80,000 + bonus, and a hybrid working model with 2–3 days per week in their Central Manchester office.

The business is in the middle of a genuine digital transformation, moving away from traditional retail systems towards a modern, technology‑led model. There’s significant investment going into scalable platforms, event‑driven architecture and AI‑enabled solutions, all with the aim of improving customer experience at scale. The Role This is a senior, hands‑on Principal Full Stack Developer position for someone comfortable operating at scale and leading by example. You’ll be working across complex backend services (around 70%) and modern front‑end applications (30%), using contemporary frameworks and cloud‑native, event‑driven patterns.

Alongside delivery, you’ll play a key role in technical leadership, mentoring engineers, setting engineering standards and helping shape the overall architecture. Your work will directly impact the platforms that support the retailer’s long‑term growth and digital strategy.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and deliver high‑quality, scalable backend services and APIs alongside modern front‑end applications
• Act as a technical leader within the team, guiding best practice and mentoring engineers
• Own technical decision‑making and translate business requirements into robust technical solutions
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues across the full stack
• Champion engineering excellence including CI/CD, TDD and infrastructure as code
• Contribute to innovation initiatives and stay ahead of emerging technologies

Skills & Experience Essential

• Proven experience working in enterprise‑scale, consumer‑facing environments
• Strong hands‑on experience with TypeScript, Node.js, React and Next.js
• Deep understanding of event‑driven architecture and cloud‑based systems
• Experience leading or mentoring engineers (minimum 2 years in a leadership capacity)
• Strong knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, observability and infrastructure automation
• Confident communicator, able to engage with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders
• Experience with GCP, Azure or AWS
