Job Title: Principal Java Engineer (with Oracle)

Location: Remote UK (Hybrid onboarding in Reading or Wales - 2 weeks onsite, then remote)

Contract Type: 12 Months/ Inside IR35

Clearance: Must have active SC Clearance

Start Date: ASAP (pending clearance transfer)

Overview:

We're supporting a brand-new public sector project and are seeking a Principal Java Engineer with strong Oracle expertise to lead the modernisation of a mission-critical Legacy system.

This high-impact role involves migrating Legacy Java/Oracle applications to modern stacks, leading engineering teams, and ensuring best practices across the SDLC.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead Java/Oracle development and support for Legacy systems
• Migrate monoliths to Spring-based microservices
• Refactor codebases and build out automated testing
• Migrate from Oracle to PostgreSQL and from data centre to AWS
• Provide technical leadership across multiple teams
• Engage in peer reviews, documentation, and stakeholder management

Essential Skills

• Java SE 8, Java EE (5/6/11), EJB, JSP
• Strong Oracle: PL/SQL, RDBMS 11gR1, Vault, Data Guard, BI
• Experience with PostgreSQL, Spring, AWS migrations
• Docker, VMware, Red Hat Linux, Solaris, Windows
• Elasticsearch, GIS (OpenLayers, TileCache, MapServer)

Desirable Skills

• IBM Initiate, Apache/Nginx, ETL, Cognitec FaceVACS, MinIO
• Basic Python for GIS maintenance

Assessment Areas

• Technical leadership, system design, software engineering, governance, and stakeholder management
