We’re looking for a Principal Process Safety Engineer to join our team of Difference Makers in Birmingham.


What does the role involve?

As a Principal Process Safety Engineer, you’ll have a background in process engineering and a specialized focus on Process Safety within the water industry. In this role, you’ll be responsible for leading and conducting comprehensive safety assessments and hazard analyses to ensure our processes meet the highest safety standards, thereby protecting both our workforce and the environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead Hazardous Area Classification (HAC) Assessments under the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmosphere Regulation (DSEAR) specific to water industry applications.
  • Perform meticulous Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) assessments and water and wastewater bulk chemical storage and dosing systems.
  • Facilitate Hazard Studies to identify potential risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Execute Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA) assessments to evaluate existing safety measures and recommend improvements.
  • Collaborate with engineering and operational teams to foster a culture of safety and compliance.
  • Develop and maintain process safety documentation and procedures.


Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, or a related field.
  • Solid experience in a process engineering role with a strong emphasis on process safety.
  • Direct experience conducting DSEAR, COSHH, Hazard Studies, and LOPA assessments.
  • Knowledge of water industry processes and safety challenges.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.

Desirable Qualifications For Senior Grade

  • Certified training as a Hazard study chair / facilitator, with experience leading safety studies.
  • Certified training as a LOPA assessor.
  • Extensive water industry experience, with a proven track record of improving process safety in this sector.
