Your Role

Reporting to the QSHE Director, the Process Safety Manager is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of process safety management systems across the Brenntag UK & Ireland business.

This role ensures that all operational activities comply with COMAH regulations, minimising risks associated with hazardous materials and processes.

The Process Safety Manager is responsible for implementing and tracking the initiatives connected to the Brenntag Global AIPS program, in collaboration and alignment with the EMEA QSHE team.

The role will involve some travel to support Brenntag teams in the Nordic cluster, in development and implementation of the Process Safety Strategy within that region.

Responsibilities/ Accountabilities:

  • Develop and implement business-wide, the Brenntag Process Safety Management framework and ensure compliance with COMAH and other relevant regulations.
  • Support the site teams in implementing an AIPS integrated system regarding their organisation and the maturity level of each pillar of the AIPS system that Brenntag has adopted (CCPS)
  • Support site teams in preparing, implementing and tracking action plans to enhance the AIPS maturity level of the sites
  • Lead on process safety, ensuring alignment with organisational goals and drive continuous improvement in process safety performance, fostering a proactive safety culture across operations
  • Act as the primary point of contact for regulatory agencies and ensure compliance with COMAH safety reporting requirements
  • Lead on PHAs, HAZOPs, LOPA, SIL assessments, and other hazard identification studies, for new and existing processes
  • Define and maintain Chemical and Operational Bases of Safety such as Fire & Explosion Prevention strategies
  • Lead the preparation and submission of Safety Reports required under COMAH regulations.
  • Working with the Brenntag Process Engineer and Projects team, provide support and guidance on process design, installation, and commissioning of new equipment.
  • Conduct and oversee process safety audits, incident investigations, and root cause analysis.
  • Develop and approve safe systems of work, ensuring adherence to process safety standards.
  • Ensure compliance with DSEAR, ATEX, PUWER, and functional safety regulations.
  • Actively contribute to improving the AIPS competence at all levels of the organisation within the region.
  • Develop and implement process safety training programs to strengthen awareness and capability.
  • Analyse process safety performance data, driving improvements and corrective actions.
  • Facilitate the process of experience sharing across the sites
  • Stay abreast of industry best practices, technological advancements, and regulatory updates.
  • Health & Safety: Comply and promote all statutory and company safety policies and instigate work practices, which results in a safe and healthy workplace.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with all company policies and procedures.
  • Key Interfaces: Senior Management Team, LMSOs, Tollgates, EMEA QSHE Team

Experience / Knowledge:

  • Extensive experience in process safety management within COMAH-regulated business preferably with a multi-sited organisation.
  • Strong expertise in HAZOP, LOPA, SIL, DSEAR, ATEX, PUWER, and functional safety standards.
  • Knowledge of CCPS system, Preventive and predictive maintenance standards (e.g., API 580/581, EEMUA), Consequence modelling tools (e.g., PHAST, ALOHA) and its application in emergency preparedness
  • Strong knowledge of process safety regulations, codes, and standards.
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing process safety management policies, standards and procedures
  • Proven ability to lead and develop to improve Process Safety Knowledge and competence at all levels within the organisation
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience in risk mitigation.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • A natural leader, coach and team builder with exceptional interpersonal skills who enjoys developing and leading others to improve their performance.

Education:

  • A relevant technical degree (ideally in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering) with strong mathematical and analytical skills.
  • A higher additional process safety related qualification (e.g. MSc) would be a distinct advantage.
  • Chartered Engineer status with membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. IChemE/IMechE/EI).
