The Role
The purpose of this role is to enhance the Employment team's efficiency and effectiveness by managing and disseminating legal knowledge, ensuring the team remains at the forefront of legal developments. As an Employment Professional Support Lawyer (PSL) at Gateley PLC, you will play a pivotal role in curating and maintaining the department's legal resources, delivering timely updates and training, and supporting client engagement initiatives. Your expertise will be crucial in advising on emerging trends and ensuring the team is well-equipped to provide top-tier legal services.
Reporting to our Head of Employment, this role can be based in our Birmingham, Nottingham, Manchester or Leeds office.
Responsibilities include:
- Knowledge Management: Lead in curating and sharing legal knowledge including the delivering of training sessions to the team, developing innovative resources, and supporting the department’s strategic goals. Helping to capture and share knowledge gained in practice within the team.
- Document Review: Maintain the department’s legal knowledge base, including precedent documents, contracts, policies, and guidance.
- Legal Updates: Deliver timely and relevant legal updates, case law summaries, and legislative changes through regular briefings and training. Horizon scanning for future developments including in relation to the forthcoming Employment Rights Bill. Welcoming new starters (including trainees) with induction materials and assisting with onboarding.
- Client Engagement: Support and contribute to marketing material and client-facing Insights via website articles, client guides, podcasts, workshops, seminars and webinars aligned with marketing and business development strategies. Practice development: Work with our wider legal-technology group designing new processes, including adopting technology solutions, to streamline working practices and deliver efficiencies. Contribute towards department specialist product campaigns, liaising with PSLs in other departments where needed.
- Advisory: Answering technical queries from fee-earners looking for solutions to legal problems. Advise on emerging trends and developments within Employment law, ensuring the team remains agile and responsive.
- Collaboration: Collaborating with our Consulting businesses to maximise opportunities for our clients. Contributing to firmwide PSL meetings and assisting with firmwide PSL projects.
The Team
We have a wealth of experience across our national Employment team, advising on the full spectrum of HR issues. We help clients with every aspect of the management of their workforce, adding value to their HR function and helping them achieve consistently better outcomes. We provide pragmatic solutions, not just legal opinions, and can work as part of an HR department, act as an HR consultant or advise senior management directly. Whether our clients are attracting and retaining the best talent, fostering the development of their future workforce, or transforming their teams, we can help to keep risk under control, while coming up with effective commercial solutions that work for our clients’ organisations. We offer support and advice on the full employment lifecycle including recruitment and on-boarding; immigration and mobility; pay – reward and benefits; policies and procedures; developing and training employees; and exit and severances.

The Person
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following:
- Qualifications: A qualified solicitor with at least 7 years' practical experience in all aspects of Employment Law.
- Technical Skills: Strong technical knowledge and the ability to interpret and explain complex legal issues clearly. Ability to apply legal knowledge in a practical/commercial manner. Good research skills, including experience of using key legal knowledge services such as Practical Law, Westlaw UK and LexisLibrary.
- Experience: Experience in professional support, training, or knowledge management is desirable but not essential.
- Communication: Excellent communication skills – written, verbal, and presentation. Exceptional attention to detail and commercial acumen.
- Collaboration: A collaborative mindset with the ability to lead on projects and influence others. A strong team work ethic and drive.
- Tech Proficiency: Proficiency in legal tech, including research tools, Microsoft applications, and knowledge management platforms. Willingness to explore technology solutions to drive efficiencies
