This is a year-long, part-time (0.6) Project Archivist position to catalogue the Joyce Butler MP archive collection held at Bruce Castle Museum and Archive. The Project Archivist will lead in the cataloguing, partial digitisation and outreach of the archive collection, and will help sustain the project’s public engagement programme of events, exhibitions, talks and workshops.
The role is will assist in the delivery of the Arts, Humanities and Research Council (AHRC) research and heritage project ‘The National Woman’s MP’: Joyce Butler, women’s rights and women’s liberation from the 1950s to the 1970s’, led by Dr Lyndsey Jenkins Mansfield College Oxford University. The two-year project commemorates Joyce Butler’s impact and contribution to women’s rights and health during her work as Councillor and MP for Wood Green and is timed to coincide with the 50th year anniversary of the Sex Discrimination Act (1975) which she was instrumental in campaigning for and initiating.

The role will be based at Bruce Castle Museum in Tottenham, London and will be part of the Joyce Butler project team which includes the Project Lead, Archivist, Education and Learning Manager and Outreach and Engagement Officer. The role will managed by the Archivist and will also be working with the permanent museum and archive staff at Bruce Castle.
Bruce Castle Museum & Archive is the local history museum and official archive for the London borough of Haringey. Originally the Tudor manor house of Tottenham, the Grade 1 listed Bruce Castle building is set in 20 acres of parkland and a vibrant and much-loved museum and heritage resource for schools, our communities and visitors to Haringey.
About You (what are you looking for in the candidate? E.g. Qualifications, skillset/exp, etc)
We are looking for a qualified and experienced project archivist to sort, catalogue and manage the partial digitisation of this complex and exciting collection. This role will collaborate with the wider project team, assisting Dr Jenkins in her research and the project’s outreach and engagement objectives, supporting and participating in the development of workshops and public talks and will involve some weekend and evening event attendance.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills And Experience
You will have:
A recognised Archive Management professional qualification, or at least one year of relevant project archive cataloguing experience.
Experience leading on archive cataloguing projects including sorting, rehousing and cataloguing a large, complex, uncatalogued archive to ISAD (G) standards.
Experience using archival cataloguing software such as CALM, ADLIB etc.
Ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders and groups to develop outreach and engagement opportunities such as workshops and talks.
Experience in the selection and digitisation of archival material.
Flexible/adaptable to a range of tasks and working situations.
Experience of working as part of a team and monitoring project volunteers.
Ability to deal with difficult or challenging customers, and possible aggressive behaviour.
Strong organisation and multi-tasking skills to manage a complex cataloguing project and support the project’s research and engagement outcomes with multiple stakeholders.
Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
Good knowledge and understanding of GDPR, Intellectual Property Rights and other information legislation and how to apply these practically to archive material.
