Project Director

Contractor: 2-year contract

Location: Cambridgeshire

We're looking for an experienced and highly collaborative Project Director to lead one of National Highways’ most significant and complex major infrastructure projects.

This is a high‑profile role at the heart of our Major Projects directorate - driving delivery excellence, ensuring robust commercial and stakeholder management, and steering a programme already in delivery through to successful completion.

What you’ll be doing

As Project Director, you will:

Lead the delivery of a major project (c£1bn), ensuring it is completed safely, on time, on budget and to National Highways’ governance and quality standards.
Be a key part of the Major Projects Leadership Team, actively contributing to corporate initiatives and continuous improvement.
Build strong, collaborative and trusted relationships with senior internal and external stakeholders, including the Executive Director, Senior Project Managers, DfT, Treasury, Cabinet Office, and supply chain leadership.

Oversee, develop and assure project management plans, ensuring all activities are organised, appropriately resourced, and aligned to National Highways’ licence obligations, corporate imperatives and the Road Investment Strategy.

Establish and maintain project management processes including risk, change, assurance, communication and stakeholder engagement.

Appoint, lead and hold to account delivery partners and consultants—ensuring value for money, contract compliance and successful delivery in line with NEC principles.

Drive a high‑performance culture across multidisciplinary teams, focusing on capability growth, consistent standards, and continuous improvement.

Champion a culture of health, safety and wellbeing across the project, continually promoting and demonstrating safe working behaviours.

Manage significant budgets (circa £1bn) and ensure all financial, commercial and reporting requirements are met.

About you

You’ll bring solid experience in leading large‑scale, complex infrastructure projects. You must be comfortable operating at pace and scale, in high‑profile delivery environments.

We're looking for someone who is:

Experienced in major infrastructure delivery, with a proven track record of completing complex projects successfully, on time and within budget.
Used to working client-side/client facing and working in partnership with a major construction delivery partner.
Commercially astute, with strong understanding and hands‑on experience of NEC contracts.
A strong leader and influencer, skilled in managing multi‑disciplinary teams and navigating complex stakeholder landscapes at executive and governmental level.
Highly collaborative and people‑centred, who will lead by example, bringing teams together and maintaining a strong collaborative culture throughout a challenging, multi‑year programme.
Used to empowering and coaching teams to make sound decisions to maintain a highly collaborative environment.
