About The Role (External)
About the team...
Network Rail is at the forefront of climate change adaptation in rail globally and we are leading exciting projects which will impact the way we run the railway for many years to come. Join our multi-skilled, dynamic team as a Project Manager and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the UK rail industry. In the weather and climate directorate we lead the rail industry in adapting the railway to a changing climate. We are the centre of excellence for managing weather and climate impacts in all their forms – providing services, assurance and leadership to each region of Great Britain including infrastructure and train operators.
We use our expertise and skill to deliver the tools, processes and change required to make the British rail network resilient to an ever-changing climate – today, tomorrow and 100 years from now. Working with a very broad range of stakeholders – from local people to government – we depend on strong communicators who can manage and influence others effectively to deliver the best possible outcomes for our passengers and freight users.
What does the average day look like?
Project management in weather resilience and climate change adaptation relies on strong teamwork and clear communication to engage and influence a wide range of stakeholders. You will lead projects from the planning stage through to delivery, making sure timelines and performance targets are met. This is a very varied workload that requires balancing competing priorities, clearly defining tasks, and closely monitoring progress.
You will manage projects that help adapt Britain’s railway to a changing climate, making it stronger, safer, and better able to cope with extreme weather now and in the future. On a typical day, you may plan and deliver projects by creating action plans, tracking progress, and keeping work on time and within budget. You will identify risks, solve problems, and develop practical solutions to improve resilience and climate adaptation. The role involves working closely with engineers, operators, regulators, and industry partners to address shared challenges, as well as coordinating forums, collaborating on projects, and building strong working relationships.
You will also support knowledge sharing by helping to embed climate adaptation into everyday business activities and raising awareness across teams. Part of the role includes assessing and clearly communicating trade-offs, proactively responding to stakeholder needs, and encouraging engagement across different forums. By leading strategic initiatives, you will build effective relationships that support national progress for passengers and freight. In addition, you will contribute to the wider weather and climate programme, which offers strong opportunities for personal development and growth.
This role suits someone who enjoys variety, values collaboration, and wants their work to make a lasting difference to how millions of people travel every day.
