Brief Description

We’re seeking two motivated Project Managers to join our team in leading projects that drive carbon reduction and advance renewable energy—making a tangible difference for a greener future. You’ll also have the chance to work with cutting-edge technologies that are shaping the future of sustainable infrastructure.

Each day brings variety and challenge. You might begin by reviewing project progress, then collaborate with regional partners, engineers, and suppliers to address challenges, plan next steps, and keep everything on schedule. You’ll take ownership of managing cost, time, and quality, ensuring projects are delivered safely and in full compliance with GRIP, CDM, and Network Rail standards.

About The Role (External)

About the team..

The Central Projects Team deliver a wide range of projects that enable the organisation and wider industry to deliver change, realise benefits and meet strategic objectives. These fall into three main categories:

  • Compliance - programmes aimed at achieving compliance with legislation or policy.
  • Strategic - deliver a clearly-defined vision that realises strategic opportunities and may change the operating model.
  • Emergent - evolve to respond to situations or events that are often beyond the organisation’s immediate control.

We have a friendly and welcoming team environment and put a strong emphasis on learning and continuously improving.

What does the average day look like?

At Network Rail, no two days are ever quite the same—and that’s what makes it exciting. As a Project Manager, you’ll be at the heart of delivering transformative projects that support the shift toward a more sustainable and low-carbon future.

Your day could start by reviewing progress on site, making sure everything is running safely and efficiently. You'll work closely with engineers, suppliers, and stakeholders to keep projects on track—managing timelines, budgets, and risks while always prioritising safety and quality.

You'll also have a strategic edge to your role: developing project plans, supply strategies, and business cases that align with industry standards and regulations, including CDM. You'll be involved in making real decisions that shape the success of your projects and contribute to the bigger picture—Net Zero ambitions, innovation, and modern infrastructure.

On any given day, you might:

  • Lead collaborative teams across disciplines to drive progress
  • Monitor and report project performance using Network Rail standards
  • Influence the development of safe working environments and robust project safety plans
  • Support talent development and ensure your team has the tools and training they need
  • Tackle challenges and adapt plans to keep projects moving forward

This is a hands-on, visible role where your leadership helps turn bold ideas into real, sustainable outcomes.

We’re looking for a confident and creative Project Manager who can hit the ground running and bring together multiple teams and workstreams to deliver complex projects. Strong communication, stakeholder engagement, and influencing skills are essential, as you’ll be working closely with senior leaders and external partners. You’ll need to be calm under pressure, comfortable challenging constructively, and able to make pragmatic decisions to keep projects on track. Experience in the rail industry is desirable, along with commercial awareness, strong planning skills, and recognised project management qualifications such as APM or PRINCE2. A keen eye for detail, business acumen, and a commitment to continuous learning will set you up for success in this role.
