Duration: Permanent.

Location: This role is based in London Waterloo. This role is a full-time opportunity, flexible working patterns will be considered.

Band & Salary: (Band 3B) £46,701 to £55,411

Brief Description

We are keen to onboard 2x project managers (Change) who can work across the full range of projects we are responsible for in our Smarter Information, Smarter Journey’s (SISJ) Programme (Smarter Information. Smarter Journeys.). This programme is a jointly led by Network Rail and Rail Delivery Group on behalf of the wider rail industry. We are at the forefront of an exciting change in the rail industry, working on a programme that is delivering significant benefits to our customers.

The SISJ programme is the industry catalyst for delivering better and simpler customer information to our people and our customers , on Great Britain's Railways. It has a vision to provide customers with all the information they want, when and how they want it. The programme includes number of projects that cover making enhancements to customer information at the booking stage, journey to the station, at the station, on board the train and post journey. The role of the Project Manager (PM) will be to lead on one or more of these projects, working with cross industry stakeholders to agree the approach and driving forward the project to ensure it achieves its objectives and outcomes.

At times this role is likely to be required to work across other programmes and projects within the freight and customer directorate depending upon priorities.

System Operator (S0) are passionate about our customers and freight users. We aim to improve the railway for the millions of people who use it every day. Within the SO Freight & Customer directorate we have a dedicated programme management team with responsibility for delivering a range of projects and programmes.

What does the average day look like?

As a Project Manager in the freight and customer programme management team your role is to work across industry project teams, operational teams and a range of stakeholders to successfully deliver projects to time, scope and budget with risks and dependencies recognised and managed. This will involve employing both project management tools and techniques and excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills. This role will be measured by the successful delivery of projects by our various NR and industry stakeholders.

This isn’t an exhaustive list; however, you can expect to be involved in the following:

  • Scoping out project mandates and remits and securing wide stakeholder support and approval for.
  • Identifying the benefits to be delivered.
  • Planning what work needs to be done, when and who’s going to do it.
  • Reviewing and managing risks and issues.
  • Completing project scheduling (resource and time)
  • Being responsible for getting the work done to the right standard.
  • Motivating the team of people involved in the project.
  • Co-ordinating multiple work streams and teams.
  • Ensuring the project is running on time and to budget.
  • Adherence to governance and reporting requirements
  • Dealing with changes to the project as and when necessary; and
  • Ensuring the outcomes and benefits of the project are delivered.


Who are we looking for?

Essential Criteria

  • Relevant experience in the successful management of major and complex change projects
  • Experience of applying project methodologies
