Purpose of the Role
The P6 Project Planner plays a critical role in the successful planning, scheduling, and monitoring of complex engineering and operations projects across the SCX business. Using Primavera P6 and other planning tools, the role ensures robust, transparent, and realistic project schedules that support timely delivery and informed decision-making.
Reporting to the Programme Manager and working closely with cross-functional teams, the P6 Planner provides key scheduling insight, risk analysis, and progress tracking to maintain control over programme performance. This role demands meticulous attention to detail, technical capability, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic project environment.
Key Responsibilities
Project Scheduling & Planning
- Create, maintain, and update detailed project schedules using Primavera P6.
- Structure schedules around defined work breakdown structures (WBS) and resource-loaded programmes.
- Collaborate with engineering, procurement, and operations teams to gather accurate inputs and develop realistic timelines.
Progress Monitoring
- Track actual progress against baseline schedules and identify variances.
- Update schedules to reflect project changes, forecasts, and mitigation plans.
- Support Earned Value Management (EVM) and performance measurement reporting.
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Work closely with Project Managers, Engineers, and Clients to communicate schedule status and implications.
- Provide clear, data-driven updates to stakeholders across the business.
- Attend planning and project review meetings to support proactive decision-making.
Risk & Opportunity Management
- Identify scheduling risks and opportunities through critical path and “what-if” analysis.
- Recommend corrective actions and recovery strategies to maintain project alignment.
- Support the development of mitigation plans alongside the wider project team.
Reporting & Documentation
- Generate schedule reports, dashboards, and milestone charts tailored to different stakeholder needs.
- Maintain all planning documentation in accordance with internal project controls processes.
- Ensure auditability and compliance with contractual planning requirements.
Continuous Improvement
- Contribute to the refinement of planning procedures and tools across the business.
- Share best practices and support training initiatives related to project scheduling.
- Champion consistency, accuracy, and visibility in all planning activities.
Skills & Experience Required
- Proven experience in project planning within engineering, construction, manufacturing, or a technical project environment.
- Proficiency in Primavera P6 (essential), with strong understanding of critical path methodology and resource scheduling.
- Familiarity with other planning tools such as Microsoft Project or Asta Powerproject (desirable).
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to interpret and present complex data.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across functions.
- Commercial and contractual awareness, including experience supporting tender or contract planning.
- Ability to prioritise workload and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Knowledge of NEC or similar contract planning requirements is an advantage.
