Background
The EWC project represents an ambitious and unique opportunity to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Corstonian ‘one stop’ shop model. The overarching aim of the research agenda is to identify the ‘core offer’ that distinguishes the unique support that Women’s Centres provide to criminal justice involved women. Through cutting edge and gold standard evaluation methods the University of Birmingham seeks to further the case for Women’s Centres as a viable alternative to custody for women.
The post holder will contribute to delivery of Workstream Three of the ‘Effective Women’s Centre’ project as part of maternity cover arrangement for an existing member of the ‘Women, Crime & Justice’ Research Group. This workstream examines the effectiveness of casework practice in Women’s Centres working with criminal justice involved women. As part of the work on this workstream to date, we have developed the ‘Gender Responsive Casework Practice Framework’, which will now be tested in a matched group intervention study. The post holder will be based for part of their working week in The Nelson Trust, Gloucester & Swindon Women’s Centres, although they will remain directly line managed by the Principal Investigator (Professor Simon Pemberton) for the project. The post holder will support the collection of primary and secondary outcomes data, assist with consent processes and data storage/transfer, and ensure fidelity with the casework framework, as well as conduct semi structured interviews with service users/caseworkers.
This is an exciting opportunity for the post holder to be part of a study that will test the effective gender responsive casework practice to inform the development of evidence-based policy and best practice across Corstonian Women’s Centres and Services.
Role Summary

Main Duties
The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.
- Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
- Contribute to writing bids for research funding
- Analyse and interpret data
- Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
- Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
- Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
- Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods
- Undertake management/administration arising from research
- Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research-related administration
- Contribute to public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader
- Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, principally through gender responsive assessments and research interviews
- Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters
- Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research
- Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines

Person Specification
- First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
- High level analytical capability
- Ability to communicate complex information clearly
- Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
- Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
- Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
- Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project
- Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
- Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
