Our Route
Central route is at the heart of Britain’s railway. The route covers a major part of the national rail network and is a key commuter line in and out of Birmingham, with hundreds of thousands of passengers, and thousands of tonnes of freight carried within our route each week. Within our route is the Chiltern Main Line between London Marylebone and the West Midlands, the Snow Hill line from Stratford-upon-Avon to Worcester, the Cross City line in Birmingham, and lines to other cities including Wolverhampton, Coventry, Walsall, and Oxford.
We are home to Birmingham New Street station, the busiest station outside of London with more than 170,000 passengers using it every day.
Brief Description
As a roster clerk you will maintain effective and efficient rosters for employees compliant with the relevant company standards in line with current National rostering principles, competency requirements and agreed Terms and Conditions.
This is a Fixed Term Opportunity for 12 months from start date.

About The Role (External)
What will you be doing?
As a roster clerk, your duties include compiling and publishing rosters using the corporate rostering tool, ensuring compliance with National Rostering Principles, company policies, and standards. You will prepare rosters for employees covering weekly and daily duties, including sickness, annual leave, training, briefings, and special arrangements. This involves liaising with local managers to crosscheck roster data. Additionally, you will manage short notice roster alterations, coordinating with affected employees and line managers, and gaining verbal confirmation when necessary. Addressing and resolving any queries related to roster issues is also part of your role.
Furthermore, you will compile and control leave records, contributing to the production of annual leave rosters. Your duties include making roster arrangements for medical examinations, interviews, safety-critical competence expiries, training plans, courses, and briefings. Monitoring and maintaining competency data to ensure no base roster shifts are left uncovered due to expired competencies is crucial. You will also perform pre and post payroll interface checks to validate roster data and submit late notice roster changes to payroll. Gathering and analyzing fatigue data, highlighting issues to the relevant line manager, and providing information and data to support route reporting requirements are essential aspects of your responsibilities.
In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have/to be:
- Excellent knowledge of national rostering principles
- Previous successful experience in prioritising workloads and delivering to deadlines
- Ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Previous successful experience of analysing data and producing reports
- Understanding of conditions of service applicable to rostering
- Understanding of roster systems
- Demonstrable ability to accurately manage data and attention to detail
- Previous successful experience of working in a team and engaging with virtual team members
- Able to demonstrate good general IT skills
It’s not mandatory to have the below, but it would be desirable to have:
- Geographical knowledge of the route
- Knowledge of the UK rail industry

Salary: £30,119. Network Rail adheres to a structured pay framework, any salary offered will be within the pay range advertised.
