  • North West Route, covering Manchester, Liverpool, Lancashire and Cumbria.
  • Central Route, covering the West Midlands and Chiltern areas.
  • West Coast South Route, covering the south of Crewe to London Euston.

Brief Description

As a S&TINCs Engineer you will be responsible for managing and administering the Signalling Incident System (SINCs) on behalf of the Principal Route Engineer. This includes review, classification and where permitted, sign-off of incidents in SINCs where signalling and telecoms failures have led to a reduction in safety of the signalling system.

In addition to monitoring of SINCs, the S&TINCs engineer will assist the Signalling Principal Route Engineers team in monitoring and managing the failure management system (FMS) and assuring asset and maintenance data systems (eg Ellipse).

About The Role (External)

Every day will be different, but you can expect to be involved in the following activities:

  • Manage and administer the process to deal with safety related failures on behalf of the Principal Route Engineer [Signalling], Signal & Telecoms Maintenance Engineers and Telecoms Maintenance Engineers.
  • Ensure that all safety signal failures are investigated, related records are updated correctly and promptly closed.
  • Lead periodic reviews of open SINCs with Delivery Unit teams and implement actions to close out outstanding SINCs files.
  • Monitor FMS, confirming that all signalling safety related failures are correctly logged and input into SINCs.
  • Complete Sign-Off S&TINCS files at an agreed level.
  • Undertake regular audit of FMS data entry including failure coding and address anomalies.
  • Undertake regular audit of Signalling Asset data and address anomalies with the Delivery Unit and Route teams.
  • Support Senior Asset Engineers with audits and verification of Signal & Telecoms Maintenance Engineers, Telecoms Maintenance Engineers and Section Managers to confirm that wrong side failures are investigated thoroughly and that the required records are maintained.
  • Monitoring of trends and implement actions relating to SINCs and general reliability of Signalling and Telecoms equipment.
  • Collate Key Performance Measure information and provide management reports as required.


In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have/to be:

  • Knowledge of signalling maintenance
  • Knowledge of safety and compliance management processes
  • Knowledge of operational railway environment
  • Knowledge of the Failure / Incident management system (FMS)
  • Knowledge of other functional disciplines
  • Good interpersonal, influencing, communication and organisation skills


We would also like but it isn’t crucial to have/to be:

  • Knowledge of standards and procedures related to the SINCs process
  • Experience making changes to the Ellipse System
  • Experience of SFI Level 1 investigations and / or SMTH testing
  • Membership of a professional body

  • Salary: £43,588 -£51,719.
