Job Overview
The POCT team can announce the fantastic opportunity to be part of a new team to manage and direct the SAMBA Rapid Respiratory Service (SRRS) across the Berkshire Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS) 6 networked hospital sites, now including Surrey and Sussex Hospitals – based at East Surrey Hospital, Reigate. The current service was set up during the pandemic, and we are now moving to have a dedicated team to work diligently to provide rapid respiratory virus test results.
BSPS is a large network of NHS laboratories serving 5 acute NHS Trusts: Ashford & St Peter’s NHS FT, Frimley Health NHS FT, Royal Berkshire NHS FT, Surrey and Sussex NHS Trust and Royal Surrey NHS FT.
The ability to travel independently between sites and work flexibly is essential. There will be a need to be able to move site to site within the working day/shift.
The successful candidate will be required to work at all BSPS locations if required.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will be expected to supervise day to day activities of and work of the SRRS team. They will need to understand the need for quality control measures, participate in audit work, risk assessments and incident logging of errors. Duties also include supervision of all quality requirements in line with UKAS requirements.
The successful applicant will
- maintain all necessary record keeping and ensure training and competencies are completed and kept up to date
- work with Managers to ensure the quality and robustness of the service
- assist with reporting into the Senior Management of the POCT SRRS team
- cover out of hours services reporting into the Senior BMS in the team with issues put side the scope of the Band 5 role
- carry out any necessary procedure to comply with the individual Trusts’ POCT Policy.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BSc degree or equivalent qualification or experience
- Working towards or committed to work towards Registration Portfolio
- POC experience that can be evidenced in detail
Desirable criteria
- ECDL
- Experience of Access databases, Poccelerator, LIMs or other POCT middleware
- Health Care Professions Council State Registration as a Biomedical Scientist
- Evidence of relevant CPD for POCT experience
Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous experience of laboratory/point of care testing
- Experience with validation protocol for POCT analysers, acceptance testing and quality control procedures
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working in a Laboratory team, assisting with training and competency
- Experience of ISO requirements for Laboratory standards
