An opportunity has arisen for a Sampling Technician at ALS Laboratories. The successful applicant will be required to undertake final effluent and crude sampling from sewage treatment works within Severn Trent Water catchment area using portable auto-sampling machinery.
Severn Trent Water is one of our major utility clients and the work we undertake for them is part of a long standing contract that we have retained for a considerable number of years.
This role is key in ensuring that we work with Severn Trent Water in order to successfully achieve regulatory sampling and analysis each year to meet Environment Agency requirements.
The role is based from the ALS Coventry laboratory and requires a large amount of driving using a fully equipped van to get to and from sampling locations. Once sampling is completed samples are required to be transported directly back to our ALS laboratory at Coventry.
Work is undertaken to pre-defined runs that are part of a fixed annual sampling plan drawn up by ALS and submitted to STW and the EA. There is also a requirement to work at weekends in order to meet out of hours sampling targets which works out at circa 1 weekend day per month.
Additionally, there is also a requirement to sample Sludge for HACCP and the Biosolids Assurance Scheme on a routine basis as per the defined sampling schedule

The day to day
- Undertaking final effluent and crude sampling from pre-defined sample points at Sewage Treatment Works (STW).
- Conducting sludge sampling at STW sites.
- Setting up, programming, and calibrating auto-sampling machinery to ensure accurate data collection.
- Recording and reporting field data in line with ALS quality procedures.
- Travelling between sites to carry out sampling activities, following written procedures and upholding ALS and STW Health & Safety requirements.
- Transporting samples while maintaining strict temperature control protocols.
- Driving safely and legally on public roads, and adhering to site-specific requirements at customer locations.
- Acting as the public face of ALS Environmental, engaging with clients and on-site contacts in a polite and professional manner.
The Essentials
- Ability to work independently and without supervision
- Strong organisational skills
- Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in all weather
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel
- Willingness and ability to travel within the UK
- A full, clean UK driving licence is essential
- Previous experience in environmental monitoring is desirable but not essential
- Awareness of Health & Safety practices and experience working within Quality Management System guidelines
