Job Description
The section of works you will be managing is the T2 Baggage system which is in the order of £150 million in value. There is a mix of civils, architectural and M&E in the works. You will be involved in the pre-construction phase (detailed planning of the works, procurement of sub-contractors and RIBA 5 design) and then into construction (around autumn 2025). The project is a great opportunity as it involves a mix of skills and phases of the project.
A Section Engineer at Heathrow Airport plays a critical role in ensuring the successful delivery of construction projects in compliance with safety, quality, and engineering standards. This position involves managing a specific section of the project, coordinating teams, liaising with stakeholders, and ensuring adherence to project timelines and specifications. The role is crucial for maintaining Heathrow’s operational standards while implementing infrastructure improvements.
Responsibilities
- Project Planning & Execution:
- Oversee and manage a specific section of the construction project, ensuring work is executed per design and schedule.
- Assist in preparing method statements, risk assessments, and work package plans.
- Monitor project progress, identifying potential delays and proposing mitigation measures.
- Ensure compliance with airport operational constraints, minimizing disruptions to airport activities.
- Engineering & Technical Oversight:
- Interpret construction drawings and specifications, ensuring they are followed accurately on-site.
- Provide technical guidance to site teams, subcontractors, and junior engineers.
- Assist in resolving technical issues and liaise with designers to address construction challenges.
- Ensure quality control by implementing inspection and test plans (ITPs) and conducting regular site inspections.
- Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance:
- Ensure strict adherence to Heathrow’s safety and environmental policies.
- Conduct safety briefings, toolbox talks, and ensure all works comply with health and safety regulations (CDM 2015, HSE guidelines).
- Promote a strong safety culture among the workforce and escalate any safety concerns.
- Stakeholder Coordination & Communication:
- Liaise with airport authorities, regulatory bodies, subcontractors, and internal teams to ensure smooth project execution.
- Work closely with site managers, foremen, and operatives to ensure coordination and alignment.
- Participate in progress meetings, providing updates and reporting on key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Materials, Procurement & Cost Control:
- Ensure materials are ordered and delivered in line with project needs and specifications.
- Monitor resource allocation and utilization, ensuring cost-effective practices.
- Assist in preparing reports related to costs, productivity, and project performance.
- Compliance & Documentation:
- Maintain accurate site records, including daily diaries, progress reports, and quality assurance documentation.
- Ensure works are completed in accordance with Heathrow Airport Limited (HAL) standards and regulations.
- Support the completion of as-built documentation and handover packages.
Work Environment & Conditions
- Working in a highly regulated and live airport environment.
- Night shifts or weekend work may be required to align with airport operational schedules.
- High emphasis on security clearances and adherence to aviation safety protocols.
Qualifications
Qualifications & Skills Required:
- Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
- Experience in aviation, infrastructure, or civil engineering projects (preferably in a live airport environment).
- Strong knowledge of construction methodologies, materials, and industry regulations.
- Familiarity with airport construction challenges, including security and operational restrictions.
- CSCS card, SMSTS/SSSTS certification (preferred).
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, and project management software (e.g., Primavera, Asta Powerproject).
- Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.
