Senior Android Engineer

We’re looking for a Senior Android Engineer to help us to continually build the Yoto Android app.

We have a catalogue of audio that inspires creative play and learning with 1,000+ titles in our card store from top creators, publishers and labels - think Disney, Marvel, Roald Dahl and Universal Music. We also create Yoto Originals like this one.

Yoto’s App Team

We look after the Yoto apps, building out new & exciting features to continually delight our customers. The apps are designed to support parents giving them access to their whole library, enable them to make their own content and to set player settings. The apps are also available for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

We’re a team of 11 including QA, UX and a Product Manager, we’re focused and fast paced, working in a Kanban environment. The current developer split is 3 iOS developers, 3 Android developers and a team manager. Everybody is encouraged to have a voice and influence the product direction. Our stack is Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, Kotlin Flows and Coroutines, Auth0, Okhttp, Retrofit, Moshi, Koin, Coil, Wiremock, Firebase, Bufgender, Espresso UI tests.

What you’ll be doing:

• Write clean and robust code following good development principles (SOLID, DRY, KISS, YAGNI)
• Use TDD incl. unit, integration and end-to-end tests and be prepared to write tests for all feature delivery
• Get involved in architecture, standards and tooling decisions
• Take part in researching, estimating and prioritising features for the roadmap
• Work with the Player OS and Platform teams to deliver features

What you’ll bring:

• Native Android Kotlin development experience
• 5+ years of experience of Android app development
• Understanding of Android app development design patterns and native Android SDKs
• Jetpack Compose
• Understanding of Android Modern Architecture, MVVM, MVP, MVC etc.
• Experience consuming 3rd party APIs and familiarity with standard authentication mechanisms (OAuth/Auth0)
• Ability to work in a fast paced scale-up environment
• Comfortable in contributing to discussions and presenting your solutions

We’re a small tech team so you’ll get a chance to play with plenty of different things all the time – bonus points for any experience or desire to dig into any of the following:

• Device testing in the cloud (Firebase, Bitrise or other)
• iOS development (Swift)
• Cloud based infrastructures (AWS), serverless development
• Experience with popular IoT protocols (RFID/NFC, Bluetooth/BLE, WiFi, MQTT)
• Android Auto
• Understanding responsive design principles, speed optimisation techniques, web standards, accessibility
• Media streaming and audio processing (codecs, live streaming, normalisation, etc)

Salary: £75,000 - £85,000 based on experience. We never want to miss out on great candidates, so don’t let our banding put you off reaching out - there’s sometimes flexibility for the right fit!
