The Role

We're looking for a highly skilled Senior Applied AI Scientist to lead the technical development of our Machine Learning solutions. This pivotal role focuses on rigorously quantifying the real-world impacts of nature-based solutions through advanced statistical and machine learning methodologies. You'll be instrumental in designing and scaling cutting-edge AI solutions to scientifically assess the effectiveness of carbon project interventions, working closely with our science, product, and engineering teams.

What You Will Do

• Design, develop, and deploy scalable AI and machine learning solutions using remote sensing and geospatial data.
• Innovate and implement advanced causal methods to precisely quantify the attributable impact of carbon project interventions, integrating techniques like Bayesian Neural Networks and Gaussian processes, Difference-in-Differences, Synthetic Control, and other quasi-experimental designs.
• Leverage state-of-the-art AI models, including foundation models, Transformers, to capture complex nature and climate dynamics.
• Work closely with academic communities and clients, presenting complex findings clearly and confidently.
• Stay at the forefront of AI, machine learning, and environmental science, continuously integrating novel techniques.
• Mentor and coach junior ML engineers and scientists, promoting best practices in AI development and scientific rigour.
  
  

What You Bring to the Role

• A passion for nature conservation and combating climate change.
• Proficiency in Python and deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TorchGeo, TerraTorch).
• Experience with geospatial tools (e.g., Rasterio, Geopandas, Xarray, Dask).
• Experience with remote sensing data (e.g., Landsat, Sentinel, high-resolution imagery, SAR).
• Deep understanding and practical experience with causal inference methods (e.g., Propensity Score Matching, Difference-in-Differences, Synthetic Controls, etc.).
• Strong expertise in combinatorial optimization, graph theory, and matching algorithms.
• Proven experience working with and applying state-of-the-art foundation models like Prithvi, Clay, or similar.
• Proficiency with cloud computing platforms (e.g., GCP, AWS).
• Exceptional communication, presentation, and collaboration skills, with the ability to convey complex technical and scientific concepts to diverse audiences (including academics and non-technical stakeholders).
• An adaptive, curious, and scientifically rigorous mindset.
• Comfort working in a fully remote environment.
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree (Ph.D. or M.Sc.) in computer science, statistics, mathematics, physics, economics, epidemiology, social sciences.
• Publications in relevant scientific journals or conferences.
