Description
Starting as a UK business in 1994, SLR now operates as a global company with more than 3,500 people, delivering client-focused solutions across Europe, North America, Pacific Asia and Africa. Throughout this time SLR has strived to grow both organically and through welcoming other like-minded businesses, such as Wardell Armstrong, into its “One Team” of talented individuals. In doing so, its core objective is to assist clients and colleagues alike in “Making Sustainability Happen”.

Overview Of Team / Business Area

Our areas of expertise include the Historic Environment (below and above ground archaeological remains, built heritage, historic landscapes), and cultural heritage (intangible heritage such as sacred space, customs, ethnicity, language and place name studies, literary and artistic associations).

Our team have been providing expert archaeological and heritage services for over 25 years, during which time we have demonstrated our ability to provide commercially aware advice and effective delivery to a wide range of clients throughout the UK. Our post-ex hubs in Carlisle and Bury St Edmunds are home to our purpose-built facilities, which provide finds analysis, palaeoenvironmental processing and analysis, post-excavation analysis, publication, and outreach. We also have dedicated field teams in Carlisle, Bury St Edmunds, Birmingham and Bolton.

The role

We are looking for Field Archaeologists, Senior Field Archaeologists and Principal Archaeologists (permanent and casual). We have ongoing and upcoming fieldwork projects throughout the UK, including North Wales, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire.

For permanent staff, when not on site you will be expected to attend one of our offices on a hybrid basis. Casual / temporary staff will be site based.

Ideally, we are looking for Archaeologists with at least 3 months of site experience in commercial archaeology. You will work as part of our wider team, and you could be based on a variety of sites including large scale evaluations and excavations.

Our Senior Archaeologists and Principal Archaeologists are required to supervise small to large teams and lead projects of varying complexity, depending upon experience. They also support us with writing up reports, completing smaller scale reports (with support from our wider team), and making significant contribution to larger scale reporting. To this end you should have or be willing to develop your report writing skills, working understanding of Harris Matrix software, and the ability to interpret your findings on site. You should be confident in your recording skills on site, and ideally have experience of working in both paper-based, and digital recording systems. Knowledge of GIS recording and use GPS equipment is desirable.

Successful candidates will have practical experience or working on archaeological sites, a degree in Archaeology and drivers license. Highly advantageous would be CIfA membership at PCIfA or ACIfA level

Permanent staff must be flexible over travel and hours as we work on sites across the UK, however our management team understand the benefit of having local archaeologists work on local sites, both from the archaeological and environmental standpoint, and as such we endeavour to offer our staff work close to their home base wherever possible. Due to the nature of the work a full driving licence and access to a car is required.

For all staff we offer an excellent subsistence package in addition to travel allowance and single occupancy accommodation, plus 1.5x pay/TOIL for work carried out during unsocial hours (10pm – 6am).

About Us

Along with competitive salaries, our staff enjoy a comprehensive benefits package with a company pension plus excellent healthcare offering, travel and life insurance, paid subscription to one professional institution and a structured career framework with regular reviews offering outstanding opportunities for progression. Alongside 25 day’s annual leave, with additional flexible bank holidays, we offer flexible, agile and hybrid working which enables staff to tailor hours worked around core hours, where projects allow.

  • Proven experience managing small field teams and running archaeological projects
  • A collaborative, people-centred approach to leadership
  • Strong organisational skills and practical problem-solving ability
