Brief Description
We are recruiting for a Senior Asset Engineer [Geotechnics] here in the Southern Region Asset Management Team. The Southern region covers 3 routes (Kent, Sussex and Wessex).
Based at London Blackfriars, you will be responsible for the management of earthworks assets , including maintenance and renewal activities. You will also be expected to provide geotechnical engineering expertise to key stakeholders and customers and support the Regional Asset Manager as required.
This is an office-based position, however site visits will be required to assess earthworks assets or monitor the progress of live projects.
About The Role (External)
As Senior Asset Engineer [Geotechnics] you’ll:
- Lead the examination, evaluation, assessment and risk management of geotechnical and drainage assets.
- Undertake the evaluation of geotechnical and drainage examinations specifying necessary maintenance and renewal work.
- Monitor trends for asset condition, failures and failure precursors and maintenance and renewal work.Confirm that geotechnical and drainage risks are mitigated, and if necessary, appropriate action is specified and undertaken and that comprehensive records are maintained.
- Develop route specific plans including all maintenance and renewal activities and asset strategies, providing the prioritised investment work bank. Manage the inclusion of all investment items into appropriate programmes and track through to completion including approval of changes.
- Support the RAM in providing the business case and sponsoring geotechnical and drainage engineering renewal schemes. Produce sponsor’s remits for investment schemes.
- Act as engineering authority for technical approval and acceptance of deliverables associated with renewal and enhancement activities, and Designer under CDM where appropriate. Review technical development of projects, checking that the renewal requirements are sufficient, correctly interpreted and any changes are agreed.
- Implement control measures where proposed interventions are deferred.
- Undertake engineering verifications.
- Support investigations into significant failures that affect the safety and performance of assets. Implement actions to mitigate the risk of reoccurrence.
- Support the RAM in providing geotechnical and drainage engineering support to senior management of Operations and Customer Services and Maintenance.
- Liaise with other members of the asset groups or external organisations to review renewal, enhancement and 3 rd party / outside party proposals to optimise engineering activity across the railway infrastructure system, resolve critical technical issues and understand and manage imported risks and conflicts.
- Undertake the production of route specific asset management plans.
- Lead the engineering input to the geotechnical and drainage examination contracts. Investigate and resolve technical and quality issues with suppliers.
Essential
Skills and Experience
- Incorporated Engineer
- Degree in a relevant subject or equivalent
- Membership of relevant professional institution
- Substantial experience of railway civil engineering, with proven abilities in geotechnical and drainage asset maintenance and renewals
- A sound knowledge of geotechnical and drainage engineering policies and standards
- An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques
- Experience in Construction Design and Management Regulations
Desirable
- Chartered Engineer or equivalent geotechnical qualification
