Main Job Purpose
· To work alongside the Principal Civil/Structural Engineers and Directors, we are looking for a Design Engineer that can lead projects with confidence.
· Client facing, responding to client needs, developing and producing reports, designs and specifications.
· Mentoring and supervising junior Engineers to support delivery.
· Undertaking site inspections and overseeing testing and commissioning activities.
· Following legislation, standards and all health and safety, quality and environmental company policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
· To perform structural analysis and structural/civil engineering design and/or arrange/check such work performed by others increasingly to Eurocodes and/or other prevailing codes, determined by the sector authority. Works may typically include bridge design, building design and/or refurbishment (stations, depots, etc), including railway platforms, drainage, car parks, arch viaducts, all from feasibility through GRIP1-GRIP8, and for London Underground by way of CDS/DCC, etc., and/or the DMRB.
· To interface with clients and other disciplines (including M&E, SISS, Architecture, Track and Signals), attending and as required, chairing and minuting key meetings, and in particular IDC/IDR type rail meetings.
· To react to call outs, attending and/or arranging attendance to site, making key decisions which may impact on the operational railway - above or below ground - or the safety of the public and others and referring to others in the team as appropriate, preparing clear and concise reports to summarise findings in an agreed report format.
· To programme and control projects and manage key issues and to keep the profit centre manager up to date on key issues, costs and challenges, change controls, etc. In doing so to deliver projects to programme, to budget and to match or exceed the clients' expectations.
· To mentor more junior engineers/technicians and to ensure good engineering design delivery from drawing practices to document control and management.
· To receive competence approval from and act in the roles of CRE, CEM and/or DPE/PE as required by Network Rail or TOC and assist with coordinating project assurance submissions.
· Responsible for quality of outputs.
· Supporting Directors’ in financial control of projects.
· Supporting audits e.g. RISQS/ISO.
· Supporting resource management and business development.
· Supporting the company to be compliant with health and safety, quality and environmental requirements, following legislation, standards, quality assurance and company administration policies and procedures.
· Travel and work flexible hours, particularly in the rail environment where night working is necessary.
· To attain the highest levels of health and safety awareness and fully understand and implement the duties of the Designer under the CDM Regulations.
· Any other duties reasonably required of the post-holder following consultation.
Minimum Competencies Required
· Appreciation of contract administration and project management.
· Understanding of Civil/Structural Engineering and interdisciplinary design through all stages of the design process.
· Excellent technical knowledge in civil and structural design engineering.
· Proficiency in report and specification writing, calculations, AutoCAD and/or Microstation and developing designs from first principles. Experience of working in the BIM environment.
· Ability to mentor and supervise graduates/junior members of staff.
Required Previous Experience
· Previous consultancy experience of a minimum of 3 years.
· Structural/Civil design, buildings, roads, rail and contract administration, drawing and contract document preparation (ability to do and also to delegate to others), site supervision. A good understanding of rail (or highways) procedures on multi-disciplinary rail projects to coordinate/manage/undertake.
