Main duties of the job

Wessex Cancer Alliance is seeking a dynamic Senior Clinical Advisor to lead regional transformation across acute oncology services. This senior nursing role offers the opportunity to influence workforce development, integrate care pathways, and shape service models aligned with national frameworks including ACCEND, the 10 year plan and the10 year cancer plan (when published). Working across the Wessex footprint, the successful candidate will provide strategic clinical nursing leadership, drive the programmes of work from the clinical advisory group, support professional growth, and co-develop tools and guidance that enhance safety, equity, and excellence in acute oncology services. Working with the UK Acute Oncology Society the post holder with lead the delivery of the Wessex strategic ambitions for acute oncology services and support the transformation of care for individuals affected by cancer. The vision for this will align with the key shifts nationally, whilst providing locally tailored provision both in acute services and integrated neighbourhood teams. We are looking for a nurse leader ready to drive change at system level with relevant experience, advanced practice, research and innovation capability, clinical expertise and thought leadership

General Duties

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will lead a broad range of initiatives to influence culture change and practice at organisational and individual levels to promote a shared understanding and transformation of AOS services across Wessex.

The Post Holder Will Lead And Support Delivery Of The Project Plans And Key Milestones Identified. Key Functions Of The Post Are

This role will ensure delivery of all areas of the AOS programme, and support the delivery of the Wessex Cancer Alliance wider programme of work. The post holder will represent Wessex Cancer Alliance nationally and locally to build relationships, develop knowledge and implement change and transformation to develop and deliver all the elements of the programme in Wessex. The postholder will be responsible for helping to develop and draft national policy – on behalf of Wessex Cancer Alliance

The post holder is expected to demonstrate a commitment to improving quality and have a track record in using evidence to drive improvement. The ability to motivate and influence individuals and teams that operate across organisational boundaries is a requirement of this role. The post holder will also have excellent leadership, engagement, and interpersonal skills.

The Alliance is committed to working in partnership with primary and secondary care, to improve service models which span boundaries and maximise accessibility for patients. The postholder will be responsible for leading a programme of work that spans different organisational boundaries – spanning primary and secondary care.

Enabling clinical leadership

  • To ensure that clinical leadership is central to the delivery of the work
  • To foster a culture of clinical engagement and influence
  • To ensure widespread multidisciplinary involvement including doctors,

nurses, allied health professionals and clinical scientists in transformation and

improvement.

  • Devise and be responsible for AOS training programme across Wessex and maintain this over the longer-term
  • Develop competency framework – across primary and secondary care

Improving quality and outcomes

  • To support and deliver an effective workplan with a steering group and

broad range of stakeholders arrangements , including an effective

communications strategy, governance arrangements and information

sharing.

  • To manage and plan the delivery and assurance of the work programme This

will require strong project and programme management skills

  • To develop and utilise specialist knowledge and experience related to the

development and implementation of new models, change and improvement

science to achieve step changes in quality and delivery across Wessex,.

  • To manage, and maintain credibility with all the key players within the Wessex

community, fostering a culture of collaboration for the delivery of equitable,

high quality care. At times this will include acting as an ‘honest broker’

reconciling conflicting views and interests

  • To understand, communicate and implement national policy through

network improvement activities.

  • Ensure that the projects maintain business focus, have clear authority and

that the context, including risks, is actively managed in alignment with the

strategic priorities of NHS.

Information Management

  • Drafting reports summarising status on issues, appraising outcomes, and

providing progress reports.

  • Collate as required, a range of information and lead appropriate analysis to

develop robust business cases and contribute to project ‘products’.

  • Analyse, interpret and present data to highlight issues, risks and support

decision making.

Policy and Service Development

  • Responsible for proposing and drafting changes, implementation and

interpretation to policies, guidelines and service level agreements (SLA’s)

which may impact service.

Person specification

Qualifications / Training Required

Essential criteria

  • Registered Nurse on relevant part of the register NMC
  • Masters level cancer qualifications or equivalent experience
  • Masters Level leadership training or equivalent experience
  • Highly developed counselling or advanced communication skills training – Level 3 or above
  • Post graduate research qualification or equivalent experience
  • IT Skills

Desirable criteria

  • Prince 2 or similar programme management

Previous or relevant experience necessary

Essential criteria

  • Significant post registration experience
  • Teaching and training pre and postgraduate multidisciplinary staff
  • Writing for publication
