Brief Description
Who are we looking for? We’re looking for a highly motivated and experienced Senior Design Engineer [Buildings & Civils][Drainage] to join our team at Network Rail. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in civil engineering design, with a particular focus on drainage within the rail or wider infrastructure sector including catchment analysis & drainage system assessment / design and scour assessments. You’ll be confident working to Network Rail standards, managing technical risks, and leading the design process from feasibility through to delivery. Chartered status (or working towards it) and excellent communication skills are essential, as you'll be collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, sustainable, and cost-effective design solutions.

Engineering Services is a function within Route Services. We sit as a central team to provide national skills and activities which enable regions and industry partners to deliver the railway for our customers.
As a large central functional team which focus on engineering delivery, we have many roles, ranging from pure engineering to project management. We design and influence every part of the railway, including structures, track, traction power, level crossings, signalling and accessibility schemes which are essential to keep our stations moving.
What does the average day look like? As a Senior Design Engineer, no two days are the same. You’ll lead and support a team of designers to deliver technically sound drainage and civil engineering solutions that meet time, cost, and quality expectations. From developing and refining early-stage proposals to reviewing detailed designs, you'll play a key role in ensuring projects are safe, sustainable, and aligned with operational performance targets. You'll collaborate across disciplines, contribute to design assurance activities, and act as a technical lead - whether managing risks, guiding compliance with standards, or fulfilling the role of Contractors Engineering Manager (CEM) where required. With a strong focus on whole-life value, you'll also help shape engineering strategy, mentor junior engineers, and ensure the best possible outcomes for the railway, its users, and the environment.
Essential Criteria
- An engineering degree or equivalent industry-recognised training qualification.
- CEng / IEng equivalent relevant to the discipline.
- A demonstrable aptitude for option development.
- Strong evaluation and decision-making skills.
- A working knowledge of rail engineering; relevant successful experience working in the principal discipline and an adequate understanding of all other related disciplines.
- An ability to work and communicate effectively in a team context.
- An appreciation of all the life cycle stages of rail infrastructure.
- CDM, Auditing and risk assessment competencies.

- Membership of a relevant engineering professional institution.
- Experience in design, installation and maintenance.
- Formal qualifications in risk identification and assessment.
