An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Metabolic Bone Centre team located at the Northern General Hospital. The Metabolic Bone Centre provides a high quality diagnostic service, including the provision of densitometry and Vertebral Fracture Assessment imaging and seeing approximately 13,500 patients per year. A Fracture Risk Assessment Service (FRAS) runs alongside specialised consultant-led metabolic bone clinics providing outpatient and day case services to the population of Sheffield and surrounding districts.
We are looking for a part time (30 hours) Bone Densitometry (DEXA) Senior Scanning Technologist to join and help lead our small team of dedicated scan technologists. You will be expected to assist with management duties which include mentoring, staff rostering and appraisals, undertaking quality audits and triaging clinical referrals so leadership qualities and or management experience are essential. The role will also require a good knowledge of IR(ME)R and IRR17 to undertake the Radiation Protection Supervisor duties. The successful candidate will form part of the current scanning team performing Bone Density scans and requesting procedures according to the relevant departmental protocols. You would also be actively involved in the continual development of all aspects of the Bone Densitometry Service in liaison with the Metabolic Bone Centre Lead and the Clinical Lead.
- The post holder will be part of a multi-disciplinary team and will assist in the organisation and delivery of a high quality fracture risk assessment service whilst maintaining a high standard of patient care, utilising evidence-based practice and benchmarking standards.
- Triage referrals under written protocols to ensure effective and appropriate diagnostic assessment.
- Supervise and participate in the acquisition and analysis of bone density measurements and VFA images in a clinical setting, requesting further imaging and or diagnostic tests when necessary.
- Assist the Metabolic Bone Centre Lead as a point of contact for bone densitometry and vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) services within the clinical setting.
- Provide support to the management team within the Metabolic Bone Centre (MBC) through the use of excellent communication and organisational skills, whilst demonstrating initiative where appropriate.
- Become a Trust-appointed Radiation Protection Supervisor for the DEXA service
Applicants should be flexible and well organised with a professional friendly manner & have excellent communication skills. They should be able to use their own judgment to resolve issues, and have a tactful, sensitive and caring approach to challenges. You should be able to work well under pressure with a willingness to suggest ideas for service improvement. Previous experience with DEXA scanning is desirable but not essential as full training can be provided.
