Role Summary
Role Summary
We are looking for a Senior Analyst to join the 10-person Economic Policy & Public Finance team. This team sits within the Policy and Politics division in London, where radical-yet-practical new polices are incubated and tested. We generate forward-looking analysis that shapes public debate, enhances the work of client governments, and supports partnerships which improve people’s lives. The role offers a rare chance to operate at the intersection of analysis, policy, and politics – not just focused on what works but on how to make it stick.
The remit of the team is broad and the successful candidate will help develop the Institute’s view on a diverse range of economic policy issues – both current policy debates and wider questions around the future of the economy. Over the past year, the team has delivered public interventions around how the UK can boost growth through trade, industrial strategy and business tax reform as well as the longer term implications of AI for the labour market. You will also work closely with other policy teams – including on science & technology, government innovation, net zero, and health – to ensure the overall policy package we develop is coherent and analytically robust. Taken together, you will help ensure TBI is seen as a trusted provider of forward-looking, politically-relevant economic thought leadership by Heads of Government, Opposition Leaders, Finance Ministers and their teams.
Senior Analysts in TBI are mid-level grades and suit individuals with a few years of experience in their field who are able to work autonomously and think creatively.
This role reports to a Senior Economic Policy Advisor and will also work closely with the Director for Economic Policy.
Please note, it is essential you have an existing right to work in the United Kingdom to apply for this role.
Key Responsibilities
- Policy development – You will use your analytical expertise, policy nous and familiarity with emerging technological trends to develop original proposals to influence the policy debate in the UK and overseas. That could include working on new ways to unlock economic growth, improve the public finances, or deliver other societal outcomes such as improving healthcare or education. This will require generating solutions yourself as well as working closely with other policy teams and tech specialists to ensure the Institute is tapping the frontier of knowledge.
- Economic Analysis – You will have a quantitative mindset and be skilled in a range of analytical techniques that can be deployed to quantify the impact of different policy choices on the economy. You will enjoy developing novel analytical solutions, both to issues that have proved intractable in the past and to problems that are likely to emerge in future.
- Communicating with impact – You will help produce high-quality published reports that communicate the costs and benefits of different policy choices in a credible and accessible way for political leaders. You will also support the Institute’s external engagement on economic policy, including contributing to policy discussions, workshops, and conferences.
- Collaboration – You will take a proactive approach to your work, collaborating with policy, advisory, and strategy teams across the Institute to help strengthen TBI’s reputation for thought leadership on economic policy globally. This will include providing economic analysis to support country teams and contributing to joint pieces of research for an international audience.
- Project Management – You will be comfortable working autonomously, able to take the lead on workstreams within long-term research projects while also managing shorter term requests flexibly.
Person Specification
The ideal candidate will be a self starter, who is eager to combine their quantitative analytical skills, knowledge of technology, and political judgement to generate well-evidenced, radical but practical economic policy solutions. Given the broad remit of the team, you will enjoy working on a variety of topics and be adept at upskilling quickly on new issues and policy areas. We are especially looking for candidates who are creative, technically skilled and able to think big. At the same time, given the breadth of the Institute’s work, we also value candidates who bring specialist knowledge in a particular policy area, drawing on prior experience in roles linked to economic policy.
The successful candidate will:
- Have a strong academic background in economics or a related quantitative discipline such as operational research or data science (at least to Bachelors degree or equivalent)
- Have applied experience of producing impactful economic or fiscal policy analysis in government, a central bank, international institution, policy organisation, economic consultancy or other private sector roles.
- Be familiar with a range of quantitative techniques (e.g. econometrics, time series analysis), statistical software (e.g. Stata, R, Python) and be a skilled user of Microsoft Excel.
- Be an enthusiastic user of new technology for analytical research, including the use of artificial intelligence as a productivity enhancing tool.
- Have an ability to communicate complex economic issues in an easily digestible manner, including to the TBI senior team, political leaders and the media
- Have a collaborative mindset and excellent interpersonal and networking skills.
- Possess a keen interest in politics, policy and technology and a passion for using innovative economic analysis to produce radical but practical progressive policy solutions
The following attributes are desirable:
- Further study in Economics, to Masters level (or equivalent) or beyond.
- One or more of the following:
- Applied experience of using scenario analysis and forecasting models to explore the impact of long-term structural trends, including developments in technology, and their potential impact on the economy and public finances.
- Applied experience of using macroeonomic forecasting models to understand how policy choices can affect aggregate demand and supply over time and impact key fiscal variables (e.g. fiscal deficit, debt, and tax burden).
- Expertise working with AI-era technology and experience of analysing its potential impact on the economy.
