Powering Next‑Gen Infrastructure with Digital & Product Innovation
The Opportunity
This is a rare opportunity to join Laing O'Rourke's pioneering Technology & Innovation team, an in-house centre of excellence redefining how major infrastructure is conceived, designed, and delivered. You will be part of the group driving the transformation of the UK's built environment through digital engineering, product innovation, and modern methods of construction (MMC).
As a Senior/Principal MEP Engineer – DfMA Product Designer, you will work at the intersection of engineering and innovation, shaping the future of the Power and Transmission sector. This role goes beyond design; it is about inventing the systems, tools, and methods that will accelerate decarbonisation, streamline delivery, and make construction safer, more efficient, and more sustainable.
You will collaborate with some of the brightest minds across design, manufacturing, and construction, influencing national-scale infrastructure with solutions that scale across multiple sectors. From early R&D through to deployment and digital enablement, you'll see your work have a measurable impact in the real world.
What will the role look like?
You Will Be Central In
- Core product design & innovation for DfMA components, leading research, prototyping, and design automations with digital toolkits.
- Driving application of product led design in key sectors such as Power Transmission and Nuclear, influencing project outcomes via scalable standardised systems.
- Acting as a technical ambassador, embedding DfMA and MMC approaches alongside product and digital engineering teams.
- Leading cross-functional innovation, from ideation to business cases, collaborating with project teams, manufacturing, and clients globally.
What skills & experience are we looking for?
Skills
We are looking for someone with a passion for innovation, a collaborative mindset, and the technical skills to drive real change in how infrastructure is delivered. Ideally, you'll bring:
- A background in electrical engineering, preferably within power distribution, transmission, or product development
- Strong understanding of MEP systems, offsite manufacturing principles, and systems integration
- Experience using 3D modelling or design tools such as Solidworks, and an interest in learning parametric or automation-based design tools
- A solid grasp of engineering workflows, stakeholder coordination, and the practicalities of delivering in a construction or manufacturing context
Bonus points for experience in DfMA, digital toolkits, infrastructure projects, or holding a professional or chartered qualification—but these are not prerequisites. We value curiosity, adaptability, and a commitment to learning just as much as credentials.
