The Asset Strategy team is the strategic asset management function of the transmission network. We set the long-term asset management strategies, asset policies and intervention plans for the transmission assets.

Our team provides leadership and direction in asset risk modelling and management, engaging with the operational and delivery businesses to set priorities and adapt to evolving network needs.

We lead engagement with the regulator and other government bodies to ensure the efficient management of network assets and delivery of outputs.

Through this we are able to maintain an efficient, sustainable and reliable network that will support the UKs ambitions and Net Zero targets

What You’ll Be Doing

As an engineer you will display technical leadership by participating in industry working groups and other collaborative activities as required, guiding and supporting innovation projects, developing and testing new tools and methods to improve business capability and efficiency, and sharing knowledge in matters relating to asset performance and risk.

In Doing So You Will

  • Contribute to the development of strategic long-term asset risk plans for the Transmission network and effective communication with the transmission licence of the ongoing 5 year order book – translating and managing the ongoing transmission Business Plan.
  • Assist in the development of the NARM related methodology and reporting requirements during the RIIO-T2 Price Control.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of adequate tools to properly manage network asset risk and annual reporting against the Baseline Risk Outputs.
  • Support the justification of any variations to the business plan as required, quantify impact of business plan changes on NARM targets and assess their potential impact in Totex allowances as per the NARM Funding Adjustment and Penalty Mechanism.
  • Manage of risk on the network through leading the development of system plans, designs and other network policies and strategies in a cost effective manner. This will include identifying and resolving potential technical issues, evaluating alternative schemes to satisfy the power system development needs and proposing innovative design solutions
  • Contribute to ensuring asset condition data is used consistently in SPT within NARM methodology so it can provide an input into the asset management decisions and regulatory reporting obligations. Contribute to the production of the NARM related annual regulatory reporting to ensure compliance with the Licence Obligations.
  • Participate in engagement on behalf of SPEN with key industry stakeholders on the technical development of asset modelling and network risk management, ensuring that SPEN’s position is well understood and viewed favourably.
  • Organise and plan your own workload across multiple simultaneous activities to align with deadlines and competing pressures from various parties.


What You’ll Bring

Expert knowledge and working experience in either Asset Management within a Regulated Utility or Data Processing and Analysis Techniques

Working Knowledge And Experience Of

  • Utility system assets: construction, operations, working practices and systems
  • Industry structure and the separate roles of Electricity System Operator (ESO), Transmission Owner (TO), Distribution Network Operator (DNO), etc.
  • Asset data systems and investment planning tools


Awareness Of

  • Commercial issues related to distribution and transmission networks.
  • SPEN, ScottishPower and Iberdrola strategic aims and targets.
  • Safety rules and procedures


Competencies Including

  • Good communication skills with the ability to write clear reports and present complex technical matters to a non-technical audience.
  • Good collaborative skills with the ability to effectively engage with industry bodies.
  • Understanding of customer service and an ability to meet/exceed customer expectations.
  • Membership of the IET (working towards chartered status), membership of the Institute of Asset Management, or Institute of Analytics or equivalent.
