Band & Salary: Band 3C £55,596 - £63,797

Brief Description

We are seeking a dynamic professional with experience in Maintenance Management, in the Signal Engineering discipline, to provide expert advice and support in delivering outstanding services for our customers and suppliers.

About The Team..

Technical Authority’s purpose is to support our front line to deliver safe and efficient performance for passengers and freight. We do this through providing technical leadership and specialist expertise, managing the National Control and Competence Frameworks, facilitating technical growth and lateral learning, and assuring regional delivery.

Our role is to find creative technical solutions to problems, to set effective strategy and policy, to cut red tape, to find better ways of doing things and to provide strong competence and assurance regimes that make sure we do things effectively.

About The Role (External)

What does the average day look like?

This position is in the Chief Engineers team in the Control, Command and Signalling team providing maintenance support, assurance and leading work to support our Routes and Regions.

This role offers the opportunity to provide leadership within the signal engineering discipline, contribute to technical investigations, and shape Signalling policies, signalling maintenance standards, and training programmes to enhance technical capability.

You will play a key role in asset management, risk assessment, and compliance, while supporting innovation, strategy development, and collaboration with industry partners. You will be supporting with the introduction of the updated SINCS system, supporting Ellipse data requests, and supporting Engineering Verification activity.

From managing projects to influencing signal engineering maintenance standards, you will drive technical excellence, continuous improvement, and the professional development of engineers across within the signal engineering discipline.

Who are we looking for?

We’re looking for someone who combines solid technical knowledge of signal engineering with a practical, hands-on approach to maintenance management. You’ll have experience working on complex engineering projects and feel confident supporting, guiding and influencing others — whether it’s through technical investigations, developing policy, or improving how we do things day to day.

You’ll enjoy working collaboratively and be motivated by the idea of making a real difference to the safety, reliability, and performance of the railway. This role will suit someone who’s proactive, adaptable and ready to get involved across a wide range of activities — from shaping national maintenance standards to supporting engineers out in the field.

Essential Criteria

  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline or able to demonstrate an equivalent level of experience (Level 6)
  • Broad technical engineering experience in the Signal Engineering Discipline
  • Project or financial planning and management experience in Signal Engineering Maintenance Management


Desirable Criteria

  • Management or supervisory experience
  • Chartered status
  • Formal Project Management qualification (e.g. APMP, PRINCE2, PMIP, MSP)
  • Proven ability in managing commercial, contractual and financial issues
  • Knowledge of the railway industry and an understanding of railway infrastructure
  • Membership of a relevant technical body
