A Senior Engineer within Asset Management & Investment at SP Energy Networks, manages the Distribution Network (LV – 132kV) by developing and updating the relevant strategies, policies and plans for the SPD/SPM networks to minimise system, economic, safety and environmental risks. You will maximise the performance of the distribution system expected by our customers, stakeholders, maximising returns in both the short and long term.
They identify and develop individual programmes of work and design of complex projects for development and delivery by the licences including asset modernisation, legal and safety projects, environmental programmes and other activities.
Act as a key interface with business areas including our Distribution Licences, Process and Technology Team, Sustainability Team and the wider NP&R business functions. You will support development of key asset management strategies across our network supporting the delivery of asset modernisation programmes essential to maintaining a safe and reliable network enabling the wider Net Zero ambitions of the regions our network serves.
And are responsible for completing supporting engineering justification, data analysis, reviewing and drafting of existing and new policy and strategy documentation and representing SPEN within industry working groups and support engagement with stakeholders and the regulator.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Contributing to the development of the long-term investment plan for the RIIO-ED3 period and future price controls for the distribution network via analysis, modelling, solution development, planning and implementation of engineering strategies, policies and technical specifications. This includes network modernisation, load related investment, system design, maintenance and the application of innovation.
- Contributing to the development and implementation of investment policies, strategies, and system designs in accordance with best practice to ensure effective management of the asset base consistent with legal & licence requirements.
- Assisting with the development of the distribution network and ensure it is in compliance with planning standards such as NETS SQSS, Grid Code, Distribution Code, P2/8 and other relevant design and asset management standards e.g. ISO 55001.
- Managing risk on the network through assisting with the development of asset replacements, designs and network policies, strategies and plans in a cost-effective manner. To examine and evaluate alternative schemes to satisfy the network development needs.
- Engaging with customers and stakeholders to effectively communicate the network technical and security requirements ensuring that SPEN’s position is well understood and viewed favourably.
- Applying commercial and technical innovation for inclusion into policies and plans to maximise value whilst managing risk in a sustainable and efficient manner.
- Preparing and supporting Licence documentation e.g. Seven Year Statement, Grid Code, Distribution Code and Statement of Charges etc.
What You’ll Bring
- Ability to devise solutions to complex problems/challenges, and applying innovative thinking where necessary.
- Ability to deliver large highly complex computationally intensive projects quickly and to a very high standard.
- Extensive understanding of distribution and transmission network design across the UK and internationally.
- Strategic thinker capable of tactical negotiations with key stakeholders.
- Understanding of the issues impacting SPEN from regulatory / system / operational perspective.
- Ability to influence and collaborate across SPEN and with customers.
- Knowledge of network design philosophy and policies, asset management techniques and practices.
- Good influencing and communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to different audiences verbally and in writing.
To Be Successful, As a Minimum You Will Have
- Degree in relevant engineering discipline or equivalent experience.
- Knowledge of power system design/ network operation and asset management.
- Ability to communicate with individuals at all levels.
- Strong IT literacy – e.g. Microsoft Office suite, specialist engineering software packages, SAP.
