Brief Description
We’re looking for a
Senior Engineer – Building Services (M&E) to provide expert technical input across our
Operational Property portfolio. From power and heating to lighting and water systems, you’ll ensure our building services are safe, compliant, and fit for the future.
You’ll play a key role in shaping the
Regional Asset Strategy for CP7 and CP8 business plans, working across our
North West & Central Region, which includes three key routes and a regional team supporting major programmes.

About The Role (External)
A Typical Day in the Role
As a
Senior Engineer – Building Services (M&E), your day will be varied and impactful. You’ll work across disciplines, teams, and technologies to help keep our railway infrastructure safe, compliant, and forward-thinking. Here’s what you might find yourself doing:
- Exploring and evaluating emerging technologies to boost sustainability and operational efficiency
- Leading or supporting investigations into the failure of key building services assets
- Providing technical leadership to route teams and acting as a regional subject matter expert
- Supporting compliance efforts, ensuring our assets meet regulatory and safety standards
- Planning, performing, and reporting on Level 2 Engineering Verifications
- Organising and chairing quarterly Building Services Engineering (BSE) meetings, including coordinating guest speakers
- Identifying and promoting training opportunities to enhance team competence in Building Services
- Collaborating with the Technical Authority Team on the development and update of engineering standards
- Engaging with the Route Infrastructure Engineering team on regional projects and initiatives
- Mentoring and supporting the development of early-career and mid-career engineers
- Conducting assurance checks across the Network Rail property portfolio to uphold quality and performance.
What You’ll Need to Succeed
In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have/to be:
- Degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline or able to demonstrate an equivalent level of experience (Level 6)
- Membership of a relevant technical body
- Broad technical engineering experience
- Project or financial planning and management experience
We would also like but it isn't crucial to have/to be:
- Management or supervisory experience
- Chartered status
- Formal Project Management qualification (e.g. APMP, PRINCE2, PMIP, MSP)
- Proven ability in managing commercial, contractual and financial issues
- Knowledge of the railway industry and a understanding of railway infrastructure

As this is a role in a regional team, occasional travel across NW&C is required. Candidates should be comfortable with frequent travel to client sites, regional offices, or other business locations as needed.
