Are you an experienced Employment Lawyer looking for a high-impact role in a world-class academic environment?

The University of York is seeking a Senior Employment and Student Matters Lawyer to join our small, friendly, and highly collaborative Legal Services team. This is a unique opportunity to provide expert legal guidance at the heart of one of the UK’s leading universities.

The Role

You will play a pivotal role in managing legal risk and providing strategic advice. Your primary focus will be employment law, but you will also have the opportunity to broaden your expertise into student matters.

Key Responsibilities:

Manage high-profile employment law cases and provide expert advice to our HR department.
Develop and maintain constructive, professional relationships with key stakeholders across the University.
Advise on complex student-related issues, including complaints and litigation.
Work independently to deliver efficient, high-quality legal services that provide value to the institution.
Navigate and investigate unfamiliar areas of law with confidence as the University’s needs evolve.

Who We Are Looking For

We are looking for a qualified lawyer with a sharp legal mind and the ability to operate effectively in a complex, fast-paced environment.The ideal candidate will have:

Significant experience practicing employment law (contentious and non-contentious).Proven ability to manage a varied caseload and handle high-profile matters independently.
Adaptability: A willingness to learn and advise on student matters and broader litigation.Strong communication skills: The ability to translate complex legal issues into practical, actionable advice for non-lawyers.
Collaborative Spirit: A desire to work within a small, supportive team of five lawyers and a legal services coordinator.
