Job Description
About the Role:
While you’ll have heard our name, there’s a lot you probably don’t know about NEXT. Like how we create most of our systems ourselves – whether it’s a website, mobile app or application. What’s more, we’re growing. Fast. And it’s the kind of growth and investment that is exciting for everyone in our business.
Our eCommerce websites and apps have grown steadily over the past 10 years to become one of the largest online retail platforms in the UK. We currently sell to 70 international markets, offering our 6 million active customers a personalised shopping experience and the ability to purchase from a wide range of products using multiple delivery methods and payment types.
You’ll be working in our fast-paced and dynamic release train, helping deliver some of the hundreds of changes that happen each week within the Next website and beyond. The mainframe ordering team are responsible for maintaining, developing and supporting the processes that underpin our eCommerce platform across 70+ countries, supporting multiple clients, languages and currencies.
You’ll be part of some really exciting projects including payment integration for our international offering and working on inventory systems with third parties. The team have also recently undertaken modernisation efforts, including moving systems to DB2 on the mainframe and developing a new registration system.
Working with stakeholders within the business from project concept to delivery and beyond will be a challenge you will continually meet. Delivering high-impact, performant and quality features will be second-nature, and spur you on to help us build even better features and technologies.
Providing development support to internal users, as well as offering out-of-hours cover during seasonal events and busy trading periods, you’ll continually feedback your expertise and experience to help make us even better.
About you:

And you’ll do it through different technologies and programming languages so we’re looking for you to have the following experience:
- Proficient in Mainframe technologies such as COBOL, CICS, JCL, TSO, and DB2 in both batch and online environments
- Familiarity with Natural and Adabas would be a plus
- Good experience with MQ, Z/OS Explorer & Connect would also be advantageous
- Proven experience working in a Mainframe environment
- Experience working in an Agile environment
- A team player who can embrace, challenge, accept and grow in a fast paced and busy retail environment
- Can confidently present technical information in a structured and logical manner to non-technical audiences
In addition, we’re looking for you to be:
- Able to speak, read and write English at a level that enables you to complete your role, for example, to understand instructions and communicate effectively with stakeholders and/or other team members
- Experienced in effectively working in a collaborative manner in a large scale, fast paced environment within a multifunctional technical team
As a senior member of the team, you’ll be helping to develop and support the systems to ensure they transform and stay robust so thousands of items of product can be picked, packed and dispatched daily. You’ll get your hands dirty in various projects as well as providing support to internal users and out-of-hours cover on occasion.
You’ll be doing all this from our site in Doncaster on a hybrid basis. A fast-paced, encouraging and supportive environment in which everyone brings an energy and a commitment to delivering for our customers and their own careers. Bring your energy. Play to your strengths. Make things bigger and better than before. Let’s Take It On.
