About The Role
As a result of successful company growth, we are looking for Senior Mechanical Design Engineers to join our design team based from our Blackburn and Glasgow Offices. Our design team interact with all departments and are responsible for delivering innovative solutions. Projects you could be involved with range from energy reduction measures for an existing building to a multi-MW solar farm or a city-wide heat network utilising low carbon heat pumps. We have a diverse and creative design team who have successfully delivered award winning zero carbon solutions. We are proud to say that all of our projects are designed in-house as part of multi-disciplinary engineering team.
Key responsibilities
Reporting to the Principal Design Engineer, this role involves a broad range of detailed design including District Heating systems, energy centre design and HVAC / Building Services design. This will include taking concept designs and producing a fully detailed design for the projects team to install. This will at times include initial project conceptual work, site investigations and surveys, client meetings and input into project submissions and presentations.
Working within a team of different grades of Mechanical Engineers you will be responsible for significant elements of the mechanical design, including energy centre layout, boiler and pump sizing, pressurisation, expansion, water treatment, de-aeration/dirt separation, pipe sizing and flue design. Other key duties involve the writing of specifications for the procurement of systems and equipment. Familiarity with large-scale thermal generating plant such as large shell & tube boilers and CHP engines is essential. Knowledge of heat pump technology and other technologies such as gas turbines would be advantageous.
Along with project accountability, you will be responsible for mechanical engineers of varying levels including Trainee, Graduate and Junior Engineers. This will include allocation of work, reviewing and checking of documentation along with ensuring all projects responsibilities are delivered on time and to programme.
What you will need
- Lead the design of distributed energy schemes, energy centres, DH networks up to the point of heat delivery.
- Provide support on larger projects.
- Appraisal and interpretation of the client’s requirements.
- Have an awareness of cost implications within design.
- Effectively deal with design issues and minimise their impact.
- Ability to design systems in the form of calculations, equipment selection and process operation.
- Liaising with internal and external designers, customers and Vital Energi’s in-house project teams.
- Awareness and appreciation of other disciplines including electrical, structural and architectural.
- Fluency with BIM and the ability to coordinate multi-disciplines with our in0house CAD team.
- Compliance with CDM requirements and our in in-house design processes.
- Conduct HAZOP Studies, Risk Assessments, DSEAR assessments, DESOPs, etc.
- Good understanding of current Building Regulations, industry guidance such as CIBSE, BSRIA, etc, and all pertinent legislation
- Ability to design systems in the form of schematics, calculations, equipment selection, detailed drawings and BMS control operating strategies.
- Ensuring compliance with legislation, engineering best practices in line with company procedures.
- Assistance in specifying the mechanical aspects for tendering works.
- Work closely with the client to further develop relationships and promote the company.
- Undertake site inspection reports and providing technical support during construction.
- Develop commissioning plans and oversee commissioning activities with internal and external commissioning engineers.
- Qualified to Degree level, with demonstrable experience in a design/ design build environment.
- A professional Engineer (Chartered if possible but not essential, member of a recognised Institute).
- Have experience in leading and mentoring design risk reviews.
- Have experience with training and mentoring engineers.
- Sound understanding of design principles including heating/cooling distribution, boiler/CHP systems, ventilation systems, flue systems, general HVAC / building services engineering, with steam system design principles being advantageous but not essential.
- Good understanding of current Building Regulations
- An interest and some knowledge in Biomass, gasification, geothermal and other renewable technologies
- A familiarity of National Design Specifications (NES/NBS) and competent in AutoCAD (2D)
- Experience/ competence of being effective communicators, who are confident and focused, with the ability to manage their time and duties in a professional and effective way.
- Be able to demonstrate excellent technical ability and communication skills both written and verbal.
- Innovation and creativity when developing engineering solutions whilst ensuring efficiency, profitability and high quality.
- Be fluent with the RIBA Plan of Work and relevant design standards and stages.
- Have good knowledge of forms of contract used within the construction industry.
