Role Overview
Day-to-day estimating will include costing of a wide range of commercial and industrial applications, from prefabricated solutions to full turnkey Decarbonisation solutions.
The role will be responsible for generating detailed takeoffs for turnkey commercial projects to for tenders and quotations. This will involve liaising with a wide range of suppliers to obtain accurate quotations for specialist equipment and installation works.
Core responsibility's of role
- Review project information received from clients and collaborate with the preconstruction team, directors, and estimating lead to define the estimating approach.
- Interpret and analyse schematics, specifications, and design documents to produce detailed material and labour take-offs. Input data into mechanical estimating software and budget templates.
- Work closely with the commercial team and contractors to assess labour requirements for each project and compile associated costings for internal review and comparison.
- Lead the development of MEP and builders’ enquiry packages, including detailed scope documentation. Manage supplier and subcontractor engagement to secure competitive, comprehensive proposals, and conduct thorough commercial comparisons to support informed decision-making
- Lead the commercial and performance comparison of plant equipment options. Summarise findings and incorporate into the project budget notes.
- Demonstrate strong Excel skills to compile budgets and produce detailed Bills of Quantities (BOQs) and price breakdowns for client submissions.
- Attend site visits and meetings with design engineers and preconstruction managers as required, both before and after contract award.
- Ensure a thorough understanding of the bid scope through collaboration with the estimating lead, preconstruction, and wider team. Conduct final commercial reviews prior to submission.
- Assist in preparing project handover documentation and participate in internal post-award meetings to review the estimate with the delivery team.
- Perform any other tasks as required by management to support the estimating function
Essential Criteria
- Third level qualification in a Mechanical, Quantity Surveying or Cost Engineering discipline or can demonstrate an equivalent level of experience.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a mechanical estimating role, on Mechanical projects from high-level budget enquiries; detailed design pricing; to full tender pricing.
- Knowledge of commercial conditions and the need for attention to detail.
- Working knowledge of labour, plant, materials and equipment rates.
- Experience in reading & understanding drawings/schematics and completing detailed take-offs.
- Experience in Microsoft Office applications – to include Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
- Ability to take ownership of their duties and a willingness to grow and learn within their team and the company. And help with training other team members as appropriate.
- Experience of working in a fast-paced environment.
