This position is for a Senior Platform Operation Manager of EMEA Data Distribution Services with oversight responsibility of the Data & Analytics Technology (DAT) group in the Glasgow office.
Position Description
Data & Analytics Technology (DAT) is part of the Enterprise Computing Data Services Organization at Morgan Stanley. It is responsible for managing mission-critical distributed database platforms, business intelligence integration and analytics, data messaging, and distribution on public-cloud and on-premises. Currently, in Glasgow, DAT has an Operation and Customer Engagement Team (CEM) for Comet (in-house Data Distribution Infrastructure similar to JEM or Jscape), InfoBlast (in-house bulk email service), Postgres, Greenplum, and Snowflake. The successful candidate will be designated as the incident and escalation manager for these infrastructures during the EMEA time zone and oversee the local team.
The person will also lead run-the-bank projects such as data center migration, plant-wide version upgrades and hygiene, release management, plant automation, performance monitoring, and optimization. Additionally, the person will participate in at least one squad as an SRE, following Agile practices and contributing to infrastructure modernization and automation.
Requirements
- 10+ years of overall enterprise-level IT experience
- Strong incident management skills with a proper understanding of ITIL procedures.
- Strong domain expertise related to data distribution, network protocols, especially FTP and SFTP, and distributed database platforms both on-premises/cloud like Snowflake, Postgres, or Greenplum.
- Strong shell scripting and Python programming skills for SRE-related work.
- Advanced Linux/Unix skills.
- Experience using Splunk OR Grafana/Prometheus/Loki stack.
- General understanding of project management, database design and architecture, data integrity and security, disaster recovery, and backup.
- Knowledge of Agile methodologies.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills to work well in a team environment.
- Strong organizational and coordination skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and high-pressure situations for outage handling, management, or resolution.
- Availability for weekend work.
Key Responsibilities
- Deploy, optimize, and manage enterprise-scale data platforms.
- Respond to incidents, troubleshoot issues, and conduct root cause analysis.
- Design, implement, and maintain disaster recovery and high-availability solutions.
- Automate plant-wide operational tasks related to provisioning, monitoring, backups, scaling, and recovery.
- Monitor system health, identify performance bottlenecks, and implement optimizations.
- Ensure data security, compliance, and access controls are enforced.
- Participate in on-call rotations and incident response.
Infrastructure & Automation
- Automation and configuration management using scripting languages (Python, Bash, etc.).
- Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible, GitHub, CloudFormation).
Observability
- Setting up and using monitoring, logging, and alerting tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/EFK, Datadog, etc.).
- Understanding of Service-Level Indicators/Objectives/Agreements (SLI/SLO/SLA).
High Availability & Disaster Recovery
- Designing and implementing HA/DR solutions (failover, automated recovery, geo-replication).
- Running and reviewing disaster recovery drills.
Operational Skills
- Incident response and escalation.
- Root cause analysis and post-mortem writing.
- Capacity planning and scaling distributed systems.
- Change management and production rollout best practices.
Bonus Skills

- Familiarity with modern data architectures and cloud services.
