Winchester College is seeking an experienced Senior Plumber & Heating Engineer to join our Works Department. This role is ideal for a skilled and versatile professional eager to contribute to the maintenance and improvement of our historic and varied estate.
The Role
Reporting to the Building Services & Energy Manager, the Senior Plumber & Heating Engineer will help maintain and improve the College's extensive range of buildings, which span from the 14th to the 21st century. The postholder will work on many different assets, including domestic and commercial heating systems, hot water systems, pumps and controls on both domestic and commercial properties.
Your key responsibilities include:
- To support and advise on all aspects of plumbing and heating, including recommendations for works on reactive and refurbishment projects.
- Identify and report on the condition of heating and plumbing systems within the College.
- Provide comprehensive lists of plumbing and heating materials required for projects, reactive works and standard stock items.
- Maintain a standard plumbing and heating stock within the depot and order new parts and components as and when required.
- To undertake planned and reactive maintenance work on College assets ensuring optimum serviceability, which meets agreed service levels and statutory regulations.
About You
Experience and skills
The successful candidate will have/be:
- An apprenticeship in Mechanical engineering, including City and Guilds or equivalent experience.
- Sufficient time served as a Plumbing or Heating engineer.
- Knowledge and experience of Electro-Mechanical or Building services engineering.
- Proven experience in Plumbing/Heating/Ventilation.
- Able to work unsupervised as well as within a team.
- Proactive and will take initiative to resolve issues.
- A flexible and adaptable approach to duties undertaken.
- Ability to prioritise work effectively and manage a fluctuating workload.
- Experience with Grade Listed buildings is an advantage, but not essential.

What We Offer
- Start Date: As soon as possible.
- Working Hours: 40 hours per week, 52 weeks of the year, Monday-Friday, 08.00 – 16.30 with 30 minutes for lunch and 10 minutes morning break, with the addition of some evening and weekend requirements as part of an emergency call-out rota.
- Salary: £36,000-£37,000 (gross) per annum, depending on qualifications and experience. Salary is paid monthly in arrears.
